As a Minnesota judge is hearing arguments Monday on a ballot measure to replace the Minneapolis Police Department, a new investigative report found that in the months following George Floyd’s death, Minneapolis officers "imposed abrupt changes" of their own by taking a "hands-off approach" to crime.
According to an investigative report by Reuters, Minneapolis officers almost immediately stopped conducting traffic stops, as violent demonstrations erupted across the city in response to the viral video showing former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin’s knee pressed to a handcuffed Floyd’s neck.
Records show Minneapolis officers also approached fewer individuals considered suspicious. After analyzing more than 2.2 million police dispatches in the city, Reuters found the number of individuals approached by officers who considered them suspicious dropped by 76% in the year since Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020. During that time, Minneapolis police stopped 85% fewer cars for traffic violations, meaning that fewer illegal guns were found and seized by law enforcement.
"It’s self-preservation," one officer who retired after Floyd’s death told Reuters, explaining how cops grew less willing to risk their encounters with the public becoming the next flashpoint.

Well, duh! By all means, put it on the ballot. The weather is nicer in Florida and Texas. Like the man said, “come on down!”
I have respect for officers who quit.
I have none for any who accept a paycheck and bennies, then sit on their butts.
Dunno.
In their own ways they’re destroying the Leftist system by draining money out of it.
With what? Garden gnomes with candy canes??
Magical social workers that will fly in front of speeding bullets, stopping them, unharmed.
They’d do more harm by quitting.
Not everyone is prepared to be a martyr. Besides, what did they do wrong? They are legitimately employed and no doubt face enforcement and ethical issues every day. This one is just a lot bigger. They are merely trying to navigate the insane edicts of their political masters.
Magical social worker Garden Gnomes whose candy canes can be used to catch bullets in flight.
“I have none for any who accept a paycheck and bennies, then sit on their butts.”
Well, I’ve met thousands of the LAPD Film Production security team here in Hollywood and even though they set on their asses on movie productions, they do the essential job of keeping away idiots from the set. Private security aint gonna cut it, esp. with traffic or road scenes. PLus, they ALL hate Biden like we do.
I think I saw some of them during Pride Week (Month?)
And the BIG LIE continues. His knee in photos was actually
on his shoulder blade. Fake inaccurate news that was debunked at the Kangaroo court trial.
I would not want to serve in that community where the facts
are political fodder. Floyd was a drugged up POS who didn’t
want to just do what the officer asked of him.
The whole thing is a travesty of justice. Now in death Floyd manages to make his family wealthy. For me he was a
POS alive and no hero dead.
The plan is to replace the police with a BLM Stasi.
If you're too afraid to do your job, regardless of whether it's because you don't think your management will support you or any other reason, then quit.
Replace the cops with Antifa/BLM martial law squads, just like last summer.
Oh, you mean the unicorn-riding Magical social worker Garden Gnomes whose candy canes can be used to catch bullets in flight and whose unicorns poop skittles and fart potpourri as they fly with their magical sparkle-hooves?
They’re not navigating anything.
That’s the whole point of staying fetal.
To collect a paycheck while not doing the job you’re being paid to do.
If they’re tired of being treated like crap, they should resign and find a locale that will value their service.
In the meantime, do the damn job.
Yep.
Them’s the ones.
For who? Their communities, the politicians trying to have social workers manage discord (turning places into Portland), or the families of the officers?
