As people remain unvaccinated — and 55% of still unvaccinated adults have said they would be very unlikely to get the vaccine, even if it were available at their doctor's office, according to an Axios-Ipsos poll — the coronavirus is given an opportunity to continue to spread and mutate, leading to strains like the delta variant.
So far, most variants of concern have come from places outside of the United States — the delta originated in India, the alpha in the United Kingdom, the beta in South Africa, mu in Colombia and the gamma is from Brazil. Lambda is from Peru — but there has already been one variant originating in the United States (originally found in New York City), called iota.
"Some strains have been first found in the U.S.," wrote Dr. Farrin Manian, an infectious disease physician at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, in an email. "A SARS-CoV-2 variant of interest called 'Iota' was first identified in New York in November 2020. It’s also important to point out that in the U.S. only a small fraction of all SARS-CoV-2 isolated from patients are genetically sequenced, so new variants can go unnoticed unless they become more prevalent.
"It’s also possible that some of the variants found originally in other countries developed independently in the U.S," Manian continued. "So as long as the virus keeps spreading in the U.S., we may see newer strains emerge."
Manian said the "uncontrolled spread" of the virus in the U.S. will be a key factor to the development of new strains. Getting the coronavirus back under control, especially in the wake of the highly-infectious delta variant, is crucial to the total prevention of the virus, as is getting vaccines not only dispersed more widely in the United States but around the world.
Iota, also known as the B.1.526 variant, is currently found in all 50 states of the U.S., as well as Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. and in 27 other countries. In studies, iota has shown considerably higher transmissibility and immune escape potential than previously circulating variants and that it can increase the infection fatality rate by 62-82% among older adults.
The variant is modestly resistant to neutralization by therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and vaccine/infection-induced antibodies. However, evidence indicates the variant does not increase the risk of breakthrough infections in the vaccinated and previously infected.
I don't understand how it is only the unvaccinated that could be responsible for a new variant if the vaccinated can get the virus.
What good is the notavax if the jabbed can get and spread COVID-19? What good are COVID-19 passports? Why do the ‘vaccinated’ need protection?
It ain’t about the disease, folks.
I believe that Delta is a scam as there are no tests for it. Merely a -cover their butt- explanation cause the vax does not work and vaxed people are getting sick faster that the unvaxed.
And spread it.
This article is BS and misinformation.
Worse - the vaccinated that DO spread it will be spreading variants that are vaccine resistant.
They aren't. It's the vaccines themselves that are causing the variants.
The US variant is called Communism,
Yeah, cooked up on Fauci’s computer. Let’s see what will they call this one? Biden’s Folly? The Washington Bug?
Correct. Democrat is the delta variant of Communism.
We developed the first variant of covid by funding it in the Wuhan lab.
I see there’s a little variant-envy going on here. We could call it the FJB variant ... seems appropriated to me.
An infection means the virus has gotten into a lung cell. It is replicating there. If the infected lung cell is in a vaxed person, the chances of mutation during replication are no different than in an unvaxxed person. The virus is not alive. It is replication that generates mutation. So there is no difference and any news splashed saying the unvaccinated are breeding is correct because vaxxed or unvaxxed both replicate.
I would think that all variants are vaccine resistant simply because vaccines DO NOT prevent the virus from entering and infecting a vaccinated person.
This is why I think the term “breakthrough” is a red herring. If the vaccines WERE designed to PREVENT infection, which we know they are not, then a vaccinated person would experience a true breakthrough of the preventative vaccine defense. Maybe I’m wrong but it does not make sense.
Good post.
Like many medicinals a vaccine can be both helpful and harmful, often at the same time.
The question is is it better to take it and risk the side-effects or go without..which has the better chance of a good outcome. And you must also ask if an effective alternative treatment would be better...
A Ham Radio friend of mine got the coof a few days ago, my friend, Marshall (freeper MrHead) and I talked him into going for regeneron..Marshall is taking him chicken soup this afternoon so I will find out how he is doing.. perhaps he could do with a dose of horsepaste...hmmm
“It ain’t about the disease, folks.”
What is it about, please?
“I don’t understand how it is only the unvaccinated that could be responsible for a new variant if the vaccinated can get the virus.”
There you go again, thinking all on your own. You know you aren’t allowed to apply logic to this. Your job is simply to comply with what Resident Biden and Saint Fauci of Bethesda tell you.
Since there are no definitive tests for any of the “variants,” the USA can have as many “variants” as we desire!
USA! USA! USA!
Well up until last year - a vaccine, be definition, meant that when you were inoculated then it was impossible for you to pass it on.
They changed the definition this year to newspeak.
Now there’s always a chance you can catch a variant - but you wouldn’t have gotten it from a pre-2020 vaccinated person because they wouldn’t have enough virus to be contagious.
Recall that vaccinated people for covid were found to have multiple times the amount of virus then non-vaccinated people which means vaccinated people were MORE contagious even without symptoms (which is a testament to the failure of the mRNA techniques as they obviously don’t provide proper coverage). That’s why we all had to mask up again.
But MORE virus means more chances for variant creation!
Sorry, its endemic. Ain’t nothing Fauci can do about it.
