George W. Bush just threw a whole lot of shade at Donald Trump
CNN ^ | 09/13/2021 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 09/13/2021 6:49:49 AM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

(CNN)The man who was president during the attacks of September 11, 2001, used a speech commemorating the 20th anniversary of that terrible day to call out the "malign force" coursing through the country thanks to the presidency (and post-presidency) of Donald Trump and offered an alternative vision for his party and the country.

George W. Bush gave the speech at the Shanksville, Pennsylvania, site where Flight 93 was brought down -- thanks to the heroics of the passengers who revolted against their hijackers. Here's the key bit (bolding is mine): "In the weeks and months following the 9/11 attacks, I was proud to lead an amazing, resilient, united people. When it comes to the unity of America, those days seem distant from our own. A malign force seems at work in our common life that turns every disagreement into an argument, and every argument into a clash of cultures. So much of our politics has become a naked appeal to anger, fear and resentment. That leaves us worried about our nation and our future together."

I am currently sorry I voted for Bush twice...

He’s not wrong. And Trump wasn’t the cause of all that ... he was a symptom. Pelosi and company started that ball rolling back in 2006. But CNN and their ilk like to pretend that division only started after Trump was elected. They lie to themselves.

No, he’s wrong. Bush is parroting Democrat and Never Trump talking points. The implication is clear.

Don’t excuse his pathetic support here of Democrats and defacto the progressive agenda.

Bush could well have been calling out cancel culture, Antifa, riots, etc. What he said was did not seem targeted to any particular political faction.

I am not defending what was said, only pointing out Bush might not have been speaking of Trump supporters at all, no matter how much the MSM wishes it to be.

Show me one time when Bush spoke out against BLM and Antifa while they were burning our cities to the ground. You can’t. Bush wasn’t talking about them here. He was talking about US. The people that voted for and elected him twice. How pathetic is that?

Considering that Trump has been taking huge bran induced power dumps on Bush, if all he can do is throw a shadow, he is doing it under 6 feet of Sh!t!

“Bush just made himself look like more of a loser.”

Future historians, if they are honest, will call out the two Bush presidents for their significant role in destroying the American republic. George H.W. Bush halted the Reagan revolution, was architect of the “free trade” movement which deindustrialize the country and crippled the middle class. In addition he allowed the US armed forces to be used as a mercenary army for Saudi Arabia in Gulf War I. He also promoted an open border policy with respect to immigration.

George W. Bush continued the destructive policies of his father and Bill Clinton. More “free trade” deals. Instead of building the physical wall on the southern border authorized by Congress he spent billions in a “virtual wall” which proved inneffective and was dismantled but was a tremendous boondoggle for Boeing. His Middle East policies turned into a 20 year occupation of Afghanistan killing thousands of Americans and wasting trillions in tax money for nothing. The accumulated national debt doubled on his watch because he couldn’t find his veto pen. His fiscal irresponsibility essentially ended any pretense of budgetary control by the president given the presidents who followed have collaborated with Congress to spend with no limits.

Ah yes, malign and foul forces.

I remember he was portrayed as Adolf Hitler and an idiot during these splendid days of unity of which he speaks.

He never disabused us of these assertions, so maybe he’s the foul force. And when BLM beat people in the streets, his lips never parted to say a word. It was all good.

I don’t care how the people rise as long as they rise. I think it would be more assured without a new party but JMHO
: )
There is a tremendous lot of dead wood and of malignant actors in the GOP but the forest can be cleared of debris and we can go on with the war chest, favorable districting and many other advantages of being a long standing party.

GWB threw “shade” on himself. What a pissy little pompous speech commemorating an historically sad day. He looked ignorant and deserving of the “privileged” criticism the left used to throw at him.

I appreciate your point of view, and its a widely held one. I’ve had countless discussions on FR about it.

My view is influenced/biased by my knowledge of the GOP. People close to me have worked inside several GOP organizations. Suffice to say, the party isn’t what it claims to be. Nowhere near it in fact. The party has no real interest in what its voters want. It only wants our votes and our money, not our principles and values.

The party machinery is actually very adept at what it does. I think a lot of voters don’t see the reality underlying the party’s manipulation of them. Despite its apparent bumbling and weakness, the party is very good at controlling its the people who come to DC. The party apparatus is a finely oiled machine when it comes to managing them to support what the elites want.

Its going to be nearly impossible to dislodge the deeply entrenched core of the permanent GOP machinery. JMHO

“George W. Bush just threw a whole lot of shade at Donald Trump”

The headline is an attempt to bait Trump into the “Pro-Wrestling” discourse Bush was criticizing. Obama and the Democrats set out to “fundamentally transform America”. In the search for the font of division, that’s a good start.

He could very well have been talking about Trump supporters basically because he is jealous. That I can certainly believe.

Whatever works. Perhaps the best scenario would be for POTUS Trump to solidify his party (new party, new name, etc) after the 2024 election (or if by some miracle he gets reinstated or an early election is called). Then there would be time for the new party to pick up the reins.
