On Sept. 3, just two days after Texas banned abortions, Vivek Bhaskaran, the chief executive of an Austin-based online survey software company, quickly assembled the handful of female employees that are based in the city.
In a virtual town hall that lasted about 15 minutes, he told the women that regardless of insurance, the company would cover out-of-state abortion services.
For the past several years, Texas has been selling itself as a tech haven attracting start-ups and tech companies such as Oracle, Hewlett-Packard Enterprises, and even Elon Musk, Tesla's billionaire co-founder and CEO, who has moved to the state. Big Tech companies such as Facebook, Amazon, and Apple all have grown their presence in the state, opening new warehouses, data centers, and production facilities.
But Texas's recent swerve to the right on abortion, voting restrictions as well as a ban on coronavirus vaccine mandates has many workers and industry leaders like Bhaskaran worried about retaining workers and recruiting top tech talent to the state. In August, Texas had 33,843 tech job openings - the second highest in the U.S. after California - according to a report from the Computing Technology Industry Association. That's up 56% from a year earlier.
Some professionals in the tech industry say they're worried about what the passage of the abortion law says about the direction Texas is headed in terms of other major social issues.
"It scares the living daylights out of me," said Deep Barot, a Texas native and San Francisco-based angel investor in biotech, software and cryptocurrency companies. "This is an abortion law, but what's next?"

Good! Move out you damn liberals.
Thank god. I cannot thing of a faster way to destroy what is left of Texas and America.
On Sept. 3, just two days after Texas banned abortions...
Wow! Texas banned abortions? Really? Must have missed that.
Yes, because high level tech workers are all whores.
Pound sound propagandists.
If you moved from Cali to Texas because Cali was such trash and your company wanted out....and you werent aware of what Texas was all about ,I guess you just werent very perceptive in the first place. Austin does not represent Texas lol.
Agree with you. Just because this tech company has found a way around Texas’ “conditional abortion” doesn’t mean this clever move is a good one. It will cost them dearly to pay for out of state murder of babies to take place.
This isn’t about politics.
This is about bribery.
Businesses are hinting they can be had for the right price.
God help taxpayers.
Anything that filters out libtards has to be a good thing. ππ»
Good! This is how America was supposed to work!
If you don’t like the laws where you live, move to a state, county, city, area where they have laws to your liking!
Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has (on way too many occasions) decided it was going to introduce Federalism into our lives, and of course, Socialists/Communists/Federalists (and there are plenty in various party affiliations (Republican, Democrat, Independent, etc.)) have done everything they can to create central command and control via the Federal Government.
If you don’t like Texas’ laws - MOVE! Thank you, next topic.
smoked out the liberals - love the way Texans do it
Very clever of these Texans..they figured out a way to get rid of democrat filth!
Tech companies should not hire workers too stupid to effectively use birth control.
If companies and their executives want to be in a state where children of the womb can be legally butchered, in some cases with body parts sold for profit, can you imagine how such executive think they can treat their employees?
Quick, pass another super conservative law that the liberals will hate. Make even the fake voters move out.
A person too lazy to vote in person might not show up for work on a timely basis.
If true, what a blessing for Texas. The new law could be a workaround to prevent undesirable blue culture people from moving into, and damaging, Texas.
A law explicitly prohibiting liberals from moving into Texas would probably not pass Supreme Court muster; this new law serves the same, beneficial, purpose.
There are factors which produce the successful economic results in Texas. Don’t move here to harvest the successful results while trying to create the ***thole you are attempting to escape from.
A company that eagerly pays to murder babies can afford to pay higher taxes.
Good, leave!
