20 years ago our American Flag was cherished, respected.

When 9/11 happened I was in California and needed to get back home to Florida.
No planes flying......so my husband and I drove across our awesome country.......and everywhere....EVERYWHERE!......the American Flag was flying...!!!!

Draped over interstate bridges......attached to car windows!.........homes, .....towns......tiny villages......huge buildings......EVERYWHERE.....our FLAG was held high!......all the way home.....

I remember when we returned our rental car at the airport, military swept under our car before we could enter!

It wasn’t long before every fast-food bag and plastic grocery bag had the flag on it. I remember quite a bit of trash on the street that had the flag on it.

When 9/11 happened I was in California and needed to get back home to Florida.

On 9/11 early am PDT, my wife and I were at a semi hidden resort on the Oregone Coast. She was still asleep and I was watching the news without volume when the first plane hit. I didn’t realize what was happening. My wife woke up just as the second plane hit the other tower.

We decided immediately to check out and head for home. The phones didn’t work for long distance. My wife called the front desk to start the check out, and I drove our OJ Simpson Bronco to the gas station across the hiway to get gas. They limited me to 10 gallons. Enough to get to Brookings, Or. but not home in N. California.

We stopped in Gold Beach to cancel later reservations and to get lodging in Brookings. The desk clerk, who, we knew got us resies in Brookings and 5 gallons of gas from their pumps.

We got another 5 gals in Brookings at a regular stop station, I thought that there was going to be a gun fight. The owner had signs no cans would be filled. He and a crazed customer came close to battle until another customer with a deer rifle told the a$$hole customer to lay his gun down and gas can down and walk away. Which he did.

The gas station owner, whom we had known over the years, gave me a # written with spray paint on cardboard and to use it early the next morning to get into line. Which we did.

The next day after the extra 5 gallons of gas, we decided to head home. I went back to the hotel to get my wife and to check out.

We started seeing American flags when we got into California heading home. Basically every vehicle had an American flag flying. I had our Navy decal with a flag on the tailgate.

We stopped for lunch in Willits at a fast food, and I asked the manager if he knew where I could buy an American flag.

He said no, but he had one to give me. He wrapped duct taped its little wooden staph around our radio aerial. I still have that little flag in my home office.

After a quick pit stop at home, I broke out our good size American Flag and put it into its holder outside by our carport. I put our “Don’t Tread on Me” Flag in its holder by our front door.

Then, my wife said, “Get the big luggage into our bedroom and then get on Free Republic to find out what is really happening.”

Which I did.
