In an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon, county and health officials developed a coordinated COVID-19 response plan to alleviate strain on local facilities amid a surge in hospitalizations.
Representatives at the meeting included: Kootenai Health, Panhandle Health District, county, state and emergency service officials.
Following the discussion, officials outlined three actions:
• Working with Northwest Specialty Hospital and Kootenai Health Urgent Care Centers to develop tiered dispatching protocols for accepting COVID-19 patients
• Revamping information graphics and public service announcements to show new measurements, including how many hospital patients are vaccinated and unvaccinated
• Setting up an additional field hospital
Sheriff Bob Norris requested the meeting in response to North Idaho health facilities activating Crisis Standards of Care on Tuesday. According to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Crisis Standards of Care are guidelines that health care providers use to determine the best treatment for patients in a disaster or emergency.
On Thursday, Kootenai Health reported 109 COVID-19 hospitalizations, 37 critical care patients and 20 required ventilators.
Before this surge, Kootenai Health Chief Regional Operations Officer Jeremy Evans said the highest peak hospitalization count was 91.
Since the pandemic began in 2020, several waves of COVID-19 have rocked the state. However, Evans said the surge currently flooding North Idaho is “faster and more aggressive than anything we’ve seen before.”

• 95% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Idaho are unvaccinated
• In August there were 36 deaths in Kootenai County due to COVID-19
• The activation in North Idaho results from staffing shortages, increased hospitalizations and stretched resources.
• 3,600 employees in the Kootenai Health system and about 550 openings today
• Kootenai Health plans to receive a 20-member medical response team and approximately 100 additional staffers through state and federal programs. That is not even half the amount they need.
• Due to slim resources Kootenai Health, a regional center for outlying hospitals, cannot accept patients typically admitted for treatment.
• Over the last three months, the number of outside requests for care has escalated from maybe 20 to 392.
• Kootenai Health operates 26 critical care beds. Some days, there are 50 or more patients needing critical care.
• Oxygen supply for ventilators is wearing thin.
• Predictions are by mid-October there will be 30,000 cases a week and about 5.8% of those hospitalized. It’s much higher than where we were back in November.
• Kootenai Health recently converted a classroom to care for up to 22 patients. Other departments on the medical campus have also doubled the number of beds to accommodate increased patient loads.
• Kootenai Health is already deploying nurses in a thinner ratio...patients are being put in conference rooms.
• Through a partnership with Heritage Health and Northwest Specialty Hospital, the state authorized a monoclonal antibody treatment center to open next week at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds.
• Officials discussed the possibility of reopening a field hospital at the fairgrounds and partnership efforts with Northwest Specialty Hospital.
Holy smokes.. inlaws in CDA, ID. Is it really THAT bad there? They said everything was fine and dandy there. Whats the real story?
No better here (Tri-Cities, WA).
also I want to scream....GIVE THE PATIENTS IVERMECTIN AND THEY WON"T NEED YOUR STINKING ICU BEDS....
Wow
It’s amazing how different locales have different results/reporting. I’ve been watching Missouri’s stats for a couple of months. Open beds and open ICU beds have never dropped below 15-20% and the graphs say we’re over the Delta hump.
I think it’s more reporting than real world results.
The article is correct. The hospitals in eastern WA and northern Idaho have been begging each other to divert patients but no dice.
So we’re at 70% vaccinated and unknown millions who have natural immunity, but haven’t reached herd immunity? In spite of the bogus vaccine, the hospitals are more overwhelmed than last year and I’m supposed to believe it is only unvaccinated pushing this? Sorry that just doesn’t jive.
Are you replacing 2ndProtectsTheRest?
Instead of questioning the handling of this under Biden, we’re now supposed to turn on our fellow citizens.
I don’t think we’ve reached anything like the January spike levels, which is odd because we’re seeing overwhelmed hospitals and we now have a lot of vaccinated people.
So exactly what’s happening and why ..
How can a retired nurse make such a simple-minded statement?
You damn well know not every intervention works for every patient and a single intervention rarely works across all phases of a disease. Patients presenting as critical do not benefit from ivermectin.
How many illegal aliens were ‘relocated’ there?
LOL
The winter spike pretty much hit the country all at once, due to the holidays, and perhaps winter weather driving people indoors. This spike is as bad or worse than the winter spike for many states, but is not hitting all the country at once, so overall it isn't as bad. We'll see if it eventually spreads and affects the whole country, or perhaps weather, higher vaccination rates, or higher natural immunity will spare some states.
I’ve posted this before. I’ll post it again. Who are all these Wuhan Virus people? My wife and I are professionals in major industries. We travel extensively and do not know a single person who has been diagnosed with this virus. Not a single one.
Our youngest son is a university student. He attends Gaming Conventions. He tells us he has never met anyone who has contracted this virus. He drives for Uber. Regularly. To earn some cash. Exposing himself continuously to strangers.
I ask again, sincerely, who are all those people?
Interesting time to force out thousands of nurses who won’t submit to forced medical experimentation.?.?
Look at the daily new cases. There is a seasonal element to Covid from September to January. Right now they are having a big Covid spike in cases.
Well no wonder they’re overwhelmed; this thing came at them all of a sudden. If only they had been given some time to prepare, say, oh I don’t know, 18 months.
It’s strange how spotty this is.
In my case, this year so far, both of our daughters, about eight people at work, my stockbroker and my company’s relationship manager at the bank.
Oh, and between March and September of last year, four good friends, all guys, who died from the Chinese virus, aged between 41 and 73.
So personal experience has a huge effect on how one perceives this, especially in the environment where the media are obviously pushing an agenda, and Fauci spends all his time in front of cameras lying.
All Stew Peters shows are lies.
