Mr. McClain died days after he was detained by the police in August 2019. His death has come to occupy a central place in Colorado’s fast-moving debate over police reform. As outrage over police brutality erupted across the country in the wake of George Floyd’s death, a wave of fresh attention and scrutiny was applied to older cases in which people died after encounters with the police.
One such case was Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died in 2019 after the police in Aurora, Colo., restrained him with a chokehold that has since been banned. Two years after his death, a Colorado grand jury indicted three police officers and two paramedics on charges including manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide.
Mr. McClain was walking home from a convenience store on Aug. 24, 2019, when someone called 911, saying he “looked sketchy” and was wearing a ski mask and waving his arms.

Colorado must have really cold Summers.
This young man really was a good guy, by all accounts. Just a little unique in his personality.
He did have THC in his system. Otherwise, he really did nothing wrong.
The audio is heartbreaking.
Apparently being odd is a capital offense in Aurora, Colorado.
Only, two unarmed black people, have been killed by police this year. 2. Considering that there are 1000’s of arrests every single day across the nation, this Is remarkable and proves that there is no systemic racism in the police force. Dozens of cops, have been killed by black perps trying to protect the public though- but blm and the left don’t want you to know that
facts simply don’t matter to blm and the left
So you’re okay with the police killing people who don’t conform with their idea of ‘normal’?
Be careful what you wish for.
“He did have THC in his system.”
Which has been legal in Colorado since 2012 and therefore irrelevant to excusing the brutality and callousness of the police and paramedics.
We do not arrest and torture people due to legal behavior and NOTHING this kid did was illegal.
NOTHING.
The cops detained him as any decent cop do. He was wearing a ski mask in August and the cop was responding to a call from a citizen. It was his job to find out what was going on. Because he was crazy, the guy didn’t cooperate at all with a short, legitimate investigative stop. But the cop sees crazy mask man starting to resist. It escalates to the guy getting cuffed. He barfs and they call paramedics. Fire department people gave him the drug that killed him.
Sad, but nothing criminal here.
The paramedic killed him, not a cop.
What drug did the paramedics give him? Just curious.
As I posted, this young man was a good guy, by all accounts.
I was referring to his whole life. AFAIK, he had no criminal record.
The only thing he did wrong was experiment with drugs, which is not a good idea, legal or not.
That statement does NOT excuse whatever happened. This story is a tragic one.
But last year and the 3 years prior there were thousands a year under Trump. /s
Thank you for the clarification. I apologize for my reaction to your post.
The last time McClain’s death came up there were several FReepers who were sickening in their insistence that the kid deserved to be killed because he didn’t immediately cower before the Almighty Police, he was weird, he was black, and they also didn’t hesitate to ignorantly accuse McClain of being a gang member, a thug, a shoplifter, and etc.
This kid was truly innocent and his murderers deserve to be in prison for their crimes.
2019 only 9 unarmed black men were shot and killed. All but 2 of them were justified, and in the 2 that weren’t, the cops stood trial and were convicted. 54 cops lost their lives that year. Only 2 unarmed black men were unjustifiablt killed by cops that year
How many black people were murdered by other black people, that year? I’m betting tens of 1000’s, maybe more.
Cops are not a danger to black people- other black people are a danger to black people. The stats don’t lie.
Ketamine, and the overdose killed him.
There is a standard of care required after giving a drug like Ketamine, which the paramedics failed to follow. They also failed to notice the clear evidence that he was overdosing.
They deserve all the trouble they are in, the cops less so.
Ketamine.
I’m absolutely ok with Officers going after those who are uncooperative.....or drugged up. When they say stop...stop...it’s not that complicated.
Sadly many people when questioned about how many black peop, people, are killed by police every year, say “1000’s’, some even say “10’s,of 1000’s”. Nothing could be further fro the truth. It is amazing that only two were killed, given the violent encounters cops have with perps every day, 1000’s of times a day across the nation.
