He was an American soldier before the Civil War. And an American citizen afterwards. How dare they.

This angers me. Virginia is special to me. The battlefields and soldiers are a very big part of its history. Taking down its monuments is revision of its history.
Whatever monuments are taken down should be replaced and those responsible held accountable.
If Robert E. Lee is somehow a symbol of white supremacy, then so are George Washington and Thomas Jefferson who are memorialized by many of America’s most notable landmarks.
This revision of history is an opening to taking down the United States.
What’s to replace America’s history? A memorial to General Mark Milley?

This is disgusting and pathetic. History isn’t good or bad, it just IS. Certainly bad things happened, sometimes because bad ideas motivated people to do them - but how are we supposed to learn about the sometimes brutal history of our nation and species (with the goal of avoiding a repeat of those events) if the authorities are telling people to be triggered every time they read some document or book?

My bet is that it will end up at a nice private Civil War museum like the one at New Market not far off the I-81 exit. It is the site of a battle where some young Confederate cadets pressed into emergency service whipped an attacking Yankee army. Fabulous museum well worth the admission charge that I visited a few years back.
FWIW, I'm only aware of one ancestor who fought in the Civil War, for the Union side, Nevada Cavalry.

A great American... what a travesty... what a disgrace...

Years ago, I got to see Monument Avenue. It was stunning with the beautiful homes, stately trees and impressive statues.
This is a sad day - not just because the last statue is coming down but because political correctness has won again.

The question of the American Civil War has become standardized by leftists as being solely about slavery, rather than about the Tenth Amendment and the right to secession. Not all slave states seceded, and slavery remained legal in places like Kentucky until the 13th Amendment was certified as ratified. After the Union Army withdrew from the South following Reconstruction, the plight of African-American former slaves living as sharecroppers arguably had not much improved from slavery. Since the British had promised to free slaves fighting for the crown in the War of 1812, that too could be argued to have been a war about slavery. Yet, history books don't call it that. Removing Lee's statute does nothing to change history. It simply is a sign of modern political correctness.

Soldiers! Let us humble ourselves before the Lord, our God, asking through Christ, the forgiveness of our sins, beseeching the aid of the God of our forefathers in the defense of our homes and our liberties, thanking Him for His past blessings, and imploring their continuance upon our cause and our people.”
“Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray - to really pray.”
“Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight - all through the day. Let us pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for the churches.”
“Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word ‘concern’ out of our Christian vocabulary. Let us pray for our nation. Let us pray for those who have never known Jesus Christ and His redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice.”
General Robert E Lee, 1863

If Robert E. Lee is somehow a symbol of white supremacy, then so are George Washington and Thomas Jefferson...So is Martin Luther King. We need to take all his statues down. He was a slave owner, too!
(See? I can lie just as well as any leftist.)

They should replace the statute with one of Clinton and Monica.

The Neo Marxists are getting their wish. First they vilified and remove Confederate monuments, they then will attack other historical figures for real or imagined infringements upon morality. The US Flag and American Presidents will be next. Unless there is a violent pushback against these people that advocate the removal of monuments this will continue.

Blacks have been the slaves of the Democrat party for decades. They keep them down on the plantation for their votes. Very simple.
