WASHINGTON — The House Science Committee will mark up its portion of a multitrillion-dollar spending bill this week that includes several billion dollars for NASA infrastructure but nothing for lunar lander development.
The committee will allocate $45.51 billion in spending for agencies under its jurisdiction, such as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation. That will be combined with portions of the bill assigned to other committees into the final version to be considered by the full House.
An updated draft of the bill, dated Sept. 4, offers good and bad news for NASA. It includes $4 billion for “repair, recapitalization, and modernization of physical infrastructure and facilities” across the agency. The bill does not assign amounts to specific projects …
However, the draft bill includes nothing for the other priority identified by Nelson, the agency’s Human Landing System (HLS) program. Nelson said in May he wanted $5.4 billion for HLS to allow NASA to select a second company alongside SpaceX to develop and demonstrate a lander capable of transporting astronauts to and from the lunar surface.
The bill, though, is silent on HLS. It does provide NASA with an additional $388 million for climate change research and development, of which $225 million would go to the agency’s aeronautics directorate for sustainable aviation. The remainder would be used for research and modeling, data management and support for wildfire monitoring and emergency response. An additional $7 million would go to NASA cybersecurity...

We can kiss that goodbye. It’s more important to to see that our future new citizens are clothed, housed, and well fed before they mail in their votes in the future….
Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of diversity training going on.
Zero money for NASA until they get back to their roots: space and putting AMERICANS on the moon again,
There’s a documentary out on YouTube on the 1969 Lunar Landing from newsreels of the day. They get perspectives from countries all over the world from ‘in person’ interviews. - EVERYONE in the world is excited.
Then they go to some slum in Florida and ask the residents what they think - all of them think it’s a waste of money. Some things never change.
The most important part of NASA will be fully funded.
That is the PR department which has the critical mission of coming up with a million excuses why NASA still can’t get folks back to the moon.
I call it “the dog ate my homework” agency.
I think the main holdup to a 2024 manned lunar landing is spacesuits, according to the GAO.
SpaceX already has a $2.9 billion contract for a lunar Human Landing System based on the Starship design.
Blue Origin (Bezos) has tried to get that scotched to get his failed lander back in the running, even offering to fund $2 billion himself. He’s tried to get the GAO to stop SpaceX, and now is suing NASA.
Meanwhile, Musk continues to work on his Starship and Heavy Booster.
Bezos has yet to put anything into orbit, and his BE-4 engine meant for the new ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket is years behind schedule. They’re going to ship 2 engines to ULA even before flight certification. Dumb.
No lunar landing, no return to the moon. The socialists want NASA to research the flying f**k for orbit, VP Heels Up Harris is rumored to be going along for the ultimate orbital inter crew docking procedure while planning the fiorst orbital abortion on the Internatiopnal Space Station.
As far as America excelling in space?
Well we are apologizing for our colonial conquest of the Moon, even though there are no black, brown or yellow humans there yet to be victims of White Supremacy.
This means no second contract for the lunar lander. SpaceX and Musk is it (under contract and offering discounts). Bezos isn’t spreading enough around, it seems.
SpaceX is going to the Moon, with or without NASA. This budget BS is probably a way to stick it to Richard Shelby and Alabama, and even Our Betters must have figured that out by now. Also, other than one bubble-headed Demwit moron who complained that the gov’t shouldn’t be paying for anything but a “new” rocket, they’re aware of SpaceX’ record of success in reducing the cost per pound to orbit.

Whoops, managed to mangle that in edit.

SpaceX will go to the Moon with, or without NASA. It is part of getting to Mars. It is also part of making damn sure Blue Origin gets shut out of space.
Superheavy4/Starship20 will launch in 2021. Subsequent test launches will come in rapid succession after that.
Dem administrations after Johnson have always killed programs that had clearly defined goals and timelines. Why limit the pork? NASA stopped being an innovator in spaceflight and became a funding bonanza for academia.
The cost of one spacecraft could keep thousands of professors doing studies of earthworms in normal and low gravity. Also does time in low g affect the number of chirps in mating crickets? You can include a dozen interns, 2 data analysts plus a data collection management staff in your proposal to insure scientific integrity of the results. The preliminary study alone would take years to determine the optimum number of crickets for the sample groups in the main study. And in manned spaceflight the sounds of crickets chirping will resound throughout the hallways.
