Australia stands by coal 'beyond 2030' after UN warns of economic havoc

London (CNN Business). The Australian government said Monday that the country would keep producing and exporting coal "well beyond 2030," despite a stark warning from a top UN climate official that failing to scrap the fossil fuel will "wreak havoc" on the economy.

The comments, made in a rebuke by the minister for resources and water, Keith Pitt, puts Australia at odds with several other developed nations, which are working towards phasing out coal by the end of the decade. "The future of this crucial industry will be decided by the Australian Government, not a foreign body that wants to shut it down costing thousands of jobs and billions of export dollars for our economy," Pitt said in a statement Monday.

In his 360-word statement, the minister listed a number of economic benefits coal has brought the Australian economy but made no mention of the climate crisis. Pitt's statement added that figures showing coal's "impending death are greatly exaggerated and its future is assured well beyond 2030." "Coal consumption throughout Asia is forecast by the International Energy Agency to grow over the next decade to meet the energy demands of countries like China, India and South Korea," Pitt said. "Australia has an important role to play in meeting that demand. Coal will continue to generate billions of dollars in royalties and taxes for state and federal governments, and directly employ over 50,000 Australians."

Australia is the second-largest exporter of coal in the world and the country has a high per capita carbon footprint, largely because of its coal industry. An Australian emits an average of 17 metric tons of carbon dioxide, while the global average is less than 5 tons per person, European Commission data shows.

It's good that the Australian government can stand up to the UN. Now the Australian people need to stand up to their government regarding lockdowns.

Australia keeps making money. The UN loses even more of its credibility. And China burns the coal in their land and kills off more of their own people.

The UN never had any credibility.

IIRC coal is an important part of the Australian economy. It's understandable that they'll continue to produce it. I'll wager that when the UN refers to “havoc” they're anticipating some kind of UN sanctions against coal producers. That reference to “havoc” is,IMO,a threat.

They’ll use the coal to generate power to desalinate water at 0.1 cents per gallon (per Wikipedia), if that is even necessary, due to global warming.

There’s no climate crisis. Just a power grab.

The Chinese fully understand that without reliable, relatively cheap electricity, there is poverty, social and political unrest. They will burn coal wherever they can get it and anything else combustible ( including John Kerry and the people at the UN among others).

It’s interesting that the Australian government can go against the UN narrative on coal, but has such tyrannical restrictions on their citizens regarding covid. Something more going on here?

I agree 100%. I'm also aware that only the "first world" nations were the ones abiding by the Paris climate accords, at least except when Trump was in office.

But to those of us who live in the south (lots of sunshine), solar works. I hate doing it at the power company level -- green energy as a one-size-fits-all "solution" never works well. But on my home my solar system produces about 70% of the power I consume (large 2-story house). The only reason I get that much throughput is because I customized it specifically for our home's power consumption habits. And it'll pay for itself in about 12 or 13 years (including interest on the HELOC I took out to pay for most of it, and assuming a 3% inflation rate on the kWh rate my power company charges).

Is that a good investment? Nah, at least not from a wealth building perspective. Therefore, it's not good for most people. You're better off learning how to budget, save, and invest, and putting your money into your Roth 401k match at work and Roth IRA's for you and your spouse. But if you get to the point where your wealth is enough to retire on (or at least large enough today so that by the time you retire it will have grown enough to live on), then investing in solar is a way to reduce the variability of energy expenses we'll have in retirement. That's the point I'm at. My wife's and mine 401K's, Roth 401K's, Roth IRA's, and plain ol' taxable accounts will be high enough by the time I retire. So I put enough solar onto my house to make it so I worry less about power rates going up higher.

It bothers me that natural gas on the commodities market is about 80% as much as it was this time last year. I'm about to convert my two gas appliances into electric. I may even get an EV next year (though we'll keep on gas car).

Unless there is a cost-effective alternate to coal then power industries will use it. I’m assuming that Australia doesn’t have the natural gas sources that are allowing the U.S. to move away from coal?

That is the whole point. Either green energy and EVs make real economic sense or the whole program is a poverty inducing boondoggle.BTW keep that gas vehicle. You won’t get far with an EV if you were ever forced to evacuate in a hurry.
