What purpose does registering firearms serve other than to facilitate their confiscation?
None. That’s the point of registration: when they decide to take it from you, they know what it is and who you are to take it from.
That is literally the only legitimate purpose of gun registration.

Confiscation is the obvious end result. NYC (yes I know it’s a freedom haters paradise) in 1976 as a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the founding of the country required that all semiautomatic rifles be registered with the promise (politicians’ promises) the the registration lists would NEVER be used for confiscation. Fast forward to the early 90’s. The despicable trash, David Dinkins and his accomplices in the city council passed confiscation - all semiautomatic rifles had the be turned in the the police, certified rendered permanently inoperable by a gunsmith or sold. Most owners complied. Sheep. About four dozen didn’t. About half of those were paperwork mistakes, and the others were arrested in the best gestapo tradition by those heroic defenders of the constitution the NYPD.
Long winded way of saying NEVER trust a politician’s promises and registration always leads to confiscation sooner or later.
