A Singapore court sentenced a British man to six weeks in prison on Wednesday, local media reported, after he repeatedly breached coronavirus protocols by refusing to wear a face mask in public.

Benjamin Glynn, 40, was found guilty on four charges over his failure to wear a mask on a train in May and at a subsequent court appearance in July, as well as causing a public nuisance and using threatening words towards public servants. Glynn was earlier subjected to a psychiatric assessment ordered by the judge as a result of his conduct and remarks in court. On Wednesday he asked the court to drop what he called "unlawful charges" and asked for his passport to be returned so that he could go back to Britain to be with his family, according to media outlet CNA.

“When in Rome, Mask Up as the Romans now do.”
He was treated unjustly, but this man was not smart.
He was a western tourist who drew attention to himself while breaking the local rules.

He was probably a victim of racism too. Treated extra harshly because he was white.
Many people in that part of the world have grown to dislike anyone who looks ‘English’.

Singapore is not the place to step up on your Soap Box expecting equal protection under the law. The more problems you cause them, the more problems they will justify throwing back at you. Petty and immoral? Yes, but they have the power in this situation, not the Tourist.

Reading Paul Theroux’s take on living in Singapore made me want to go never go there, under any circumstance.

Singapore has been a lock down state for years. My Coast Guard shipmate was stationed at the Resident Inspectors Office in Singapore in the 80’s and one of his kids wrote her name in freshly poured concrete outside their housing area. It was nearlyn international incident but eventually my buddy paid to dig up the side walk and repour the cement.

Singapore is very sterile expensive city. It is wonderful if you have money and don’t mind following the many silly rules. But not a good place to ride out COVID.

Those familiar with Singapore aren't surprised by this. They don't fool around there....you follow the rules or suffer the consequences.

They don’t mess around in Singapore. If you want to go there be sure to obey all the laws. They don’t even care if you are a DemonRAT. You get no slack.

He’s a “sovereign citizen” nutcase. He made a mockery of the police and justice system of a country where hw was a guest. Go ahead and tell a judge in any country “you have no authority over me”, and “we do not have a contract so none of your laws apply to me”. He’s lucky he’s not going to be caned.

Been to Singapore many times. Lot’s of strict laws, none of them are difficult to understand and follow. It’s a great place to visit if you have the coin (my trips were “taxpayer funded”). Just don’t break their laws, especially with drugs...
