Just to dispel a few myths. There is no such thing as an "Angel" call sign. Aircraft will still use their normal call sign. There is no mass flare ejection, as shown in some of those pictures. Flares and chaff are only used in a combat zone or on a training flight. Flares and chaff will be removed once out of the combat zone. Our fallen coming out of Afghanistan will be on a C-17 that will land at some base in the Middle East or Europe. From there the remains will be flown to Dover AFB in Delaware. And it's highly unlikely a C-130 will be involved.

I've been on one of these missions. But a different theater and a different time. We did use a C-130 on our mission, but that's because C-17s do not routinely fly into Vietnam. We started the final journey home for one of our own that was recovered in Vietnam. We used our regular call sign and we carried no flares and chaff. I'm sure the Vietnamese would be wondering why, if we had. We took the remains to U-Tapao, Thailand, where the journey would continue on a C-17 on a routine channel mission. The eventual destination in this case would be Hawaii, where positive identification would be made at the lab there.
