A Houston doctor says he is using the anti-parasite medication ivermectin with a combination of drugs to treat COVID-19 patients, despite warnings from federal health officials that it could cause serious harm when used to combat the virus.
Dr. Joseph Varon, chief medical officer at United Memorial Medical Center, on Thursday told the Houston Chronicle that he has used ivermectin since the start of the pandemic in all COVID patients. He said he administers a low dosage based on the people’s weight with a cocktail of steroids and vitamins.

“We did it intermittently in April, May and June of last year,” Varon said. “But as of July (2021), every patient that comes in goes on ivermectin.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning on Thursday about a rapid increase in ivermectin prescriptions and reports of severe illness in people who ingest the drug to treat the virus.
Ivermectin is a medication only approved by the FDA to treat certain parasitic infections, head lice or skin conditions such as rosacea. An over-the-counter version for animals treats heartworm disease. To date, there is no well-designed scientific study that shows ivermectin effectively prevents or treats COVID-19 at any stage of the illness, said Dr. Prathit Kulkarni, assistant professor of medicine in infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine.
Taking the drug for an unapproved use can be dangerous, according to the FDA. Large doses can cause a number of side effects, including nausea, seizures and death. Even levels of ivermectin for approved uses can interact with other medications, like blood-thinners, the FDA says.
In one recent case, an adult became disoriented and needed to be hospitalized after taking ivermectin tablets of unknown strength purchased on the internet, according to the CDC. Another person was hospitalized for nine days after drinking an injectable version of ivermectin intended for use in cattle. They showed up to the hospital with confusion, drowsiness, visual hallucinations, tachypnea and tremors, the CDC said.
Varon said he is using the drug in small doses “because it makes a difference” in COVID patients. He said no one has overdosed or died in the hospital after ingesting it.
“More importantly, my love for (ivermectin) is based on my personal use and good outcomes my patients have had,” Varon said in an email. “Once you see it work, it is difficult to deny its usefulness.”
Varon shared a PowerPoint presentation with the Chronicle that points to research showing some benefits in the use of ivermectin against COVID. A portion of the research came from a paper that was removed from its publication site because of concerns over plagiarism and misuse of data.

A former coworker's wife worked in a medical research lab. She joked that in the chemical toxicity tests they didn't count the "mouse structural failure" deaths from the mouse just popping from being overdosed so much.

The Times of India published this statement on July 29. Kerala has continued to have the majority of new daily cases and almost 25% of India’s daily deaths despite a population of 34 million, less than 3% of India’s total population.
On August 15, Kerala accounted for 18,582 of India’s 32,937 new cases and 102 of India’s 417 new deaths. By contrast, the Ivermectin-using state of Delhi, with nearly the same population size, recorded only 53 new cases and ZERO deaths. In comparison, Uttar Pradesh, with almost eight times as many inhabitants, had only 30 new cases and ONE death.
Kerala had 619 times as many new cases as Uttar Pradesh and over 100 times as many deaths.
So what could Kerala be doing wrong?
Hint: Over-reliance on vaccines and under-reliance on Ivermectin.

Drugs are prescribed for ‘off label’ use by physicians EVER SINGLE DAY and no one bats an eye. It’s a witch hunt, pure evil with holding effective treatments. The key is TREAT EARLY

Any drug used to treat any illness can cause serious harm. That is the whole reason there are patient inserts in your drugs. Using a prescribed drug for an off-label use does not increase that risk. Before being prescribed in such a manner there may not be FDA approval but there is lots and lots of evidence that it does work in that application with minimal risk of harming the patient.

More than anything else, covid has taught me how closed-minded many docs are. I think the spirit of medical practice has been stamped out by insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry. It’s a damned shame.
