As China-Taiwan Tensions Rise, Japan Begins Preparing for Possible Conflict

China’s growing assertiveness toward Taiwan has triggered a public push by Japanese leaders to plan for a possible conflict, a shift that could lead to closer cooperation with the U.S. military.

Tokyo officials, normally wary of upsetting Beijing, are speaking openly about preparing for a crisis and supporting Taiwan, a self-ruled island claimed by China, despite Japan’s pacifist constitution.

Like the U.S., Japan doesn’t have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. But on Friday, lawmakers in Tokyo and Taipei held a rare meeting by videoconference to discuss ways to boost ties, including possible cooperation in maritime rescue.

Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso said recently in a speech to supporters that Japan and the U.S. should plan together to defend the island in the event of hostilities.

The countries on this planet are going to rue the day they thought getting rid of Trump was the most important thing to do.

My concern is that if China wants a clear shot at invading Taiwan, they will need to take out the US military bases on Okinawa and the home islands of Japan. And that means a strike with DF-21 nuclear armed missiles.

Yep. The liberal elite hate strong leaders, until they really need them. In a way, it reminds me of how Tommy Atkins was treated in the Kipling poem:

O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play.

Like the U.S., Japan doesn’t have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Japanese attitude: "[shrug] While it is true that we have no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, will not stand by in the face of Chinese aggression."

US attitude: "[shrug] We have no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, so China can do what it likes. And remember: 10% for the Big Guy."

There are a few pro CCP cheerleaders on this site who believe China can beat the US and Japan together.

They are not stupid.

They are doing the bidding of their masters.

“And that means a strike with DF-21 nuclear armed missiles.”

Even though Taiwan is only 90 miles off shore, it’s very difficult to invade when you no longer exist.

Nah, all China has to do is make a threat and Generals Milley and Austin will desert the bases - along with all the weapons and technology - and move troops to some small indefensible city.

President for Life Xi: We will win because the Sino are smarter and stronger than anybody else.

Sec of Defense Austin: Yet another example of too much white racism in America that needs to be rooted out to make us stronger.

a shift that could lead to closer cooperation with the U.S. military.

After what we saw in Afghanistan, I hope they're working on a contingency plan.
