Canceling Rent is Canceling America
American Thinker.com ^ | August 24, 2021 | William Sullivan

Long after Twitter decided to censor the leader of the free world for suggesting dangerous ideas, such as his suggestion that the American people should have absolute assurances about the integrity of presidential elections, it struck me that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her cadre have been free as birds to use the platform to loudly crow about the need to “cancel rent.”

This is the most dangerous idea to have been peddled by Democrats in recent years, which, if you’ve happened to notice the Party’s hard pitch leftward, is really saying something.

The danger here isn’t difficult to discern.

Say I own a piece of property, and like millions of Americans, I fashioned it for use as a rental property to earn income from tenants for its use. The government decreeing that I can’t legally and freely negotiate rent for the use of that property, or evict a tenant for refusal to pay, is the absolute nullification of my liberty and right to ownership of that property.

That’s it. Full stop.

After all, if I had liberty, I would certainly choose to do something with the property other than rent it to tenants who don’t pay. Any law keeping the tenants there without payment would amount to a government gun to my head. Of course, the government could pay me to house the tenants, but the government has no money at all lest it first takes it from others. This makes the latter alternative little more than full-on communism, complete with a government boot on the collective throat in demanding redistribution of resources to manage the individual requirements of daily living.

And despite what entire generations must’ve learned in college for decades, nothing about any of that is good, and nothing about that is American.

In some countries, when the communists take over, they nationalize things like railroads and coal mines and whatnot.

Here, the landlords are seeing the government basically nationalize their rental properties. Their real estate.

And, to some extent, out bodies have been nationalized and the government believes it has the right to determine what is going to be put into our bodies.

What the hell happened to us?

Landlords are going to ask for a year (or two) rental deposit up front.

There's also going to be a booming business in "how to get your building to lose its Certificate of Occupancy".

I agree, this is the worst assault in individual and property rights in the countries history and most are barely talking about it. If the government can decide to take over my property without just compensation, whats to stop them from taking yours? The answer is absolutely nothing. And without private property rights, we don’t have the USA.

Rent is payment for goods/services received. The gov does not have the right to “cancel” it, just like it doesn’t have the right to cancel my payment to Dunkin for my coffee, forcing Dunkin to provide a good/service without compensation.

The gov does not have the right to invalidate the terms of a valid contract in which it is not a party.

Remember how they made stealing under $950 NOT a crime in San Fran? That helps to explain what they are doing: eliminating private ownership. Communism’s first dogma: eliminate private property.

The government wants to take over housing, and have British-Style Council Estates, where they can assign where people live.

Landlords are going to ask for a year (or two) rental deposit up front.

Some states cap the security deposit to 1 month rent. New York does this, as does Illinois.

For tenants that don’t receive a federal (or state) rental subsidy, I believe what you will see are more extensive credit checks and potential renters rejected based on a credit report or FICO score, etc.

They will never get that amount. People rent because they aren’t loaded with cash.

“extensive credit checks and potential renters rejected based on a credit report or FICO “

I think some states bar you from checking credit and criminal reports.

Really? Criminal reports I could see, but credit reports?

Don’t know how landlords do it.

Minorities fail both checks more often. If you have rentals, sell now.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/04/nyregion/nj-housing-bill-ban-the-box-bill.html

“Rental applications in New Jersey will no longer ask about criminal convictions, and landlords’ use of background checks will be limited.”
