Afghanistan war neocons like George W. Bush would like you to know this isn't their fault

The neoconservatives who launched the war in Afghanistan would very much like you to know the war’s ignominious ending is someone else's fault.

In The Atlantic, Tom Nichols wrote a piece titled, “Afghanistan Is Your Fault,” saying the loss of the war should be blamed on American voters. Former Bush administration speechwriter David Frum said we could have won the war in Afghanistan with this one little trick (namely killing Osama bin Laden in December 2001 instead of May 2011). Eliot A. Cohen — a founder of the infamous neoconservative group Project for the New American Century — said now was a time for “for meticulous soul-searching” that is “without recrimination.”

Very few people in American history are as due for recriminations as the neoconservative cabal in then-President George W. Bush's administration

But very few people in American history are as due for recriminations as the neoconservative cabal in then-President George W. Bush's administration who drove us heedlessly into decadeslong conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Sober analysts at the time made clear that remaking Iraq and the “graveyard of empires” into Western-friendly, capitalist, liberal democracies was a fool’s errand.

As we evaluate the failures of those efforts today, we must recognize the problem was not in the execution of the wars, or the withdrawals, but in the very idea of committing American lives and wealth to forcibly “rebuilding” nations across the globe to fit neoconservatives' vision of society. Their hubris and greed cost us trillions of dollars and thousands of lives — and did more to diminish American power than our stated adversaries ever could.

While neoconservatives claim to be motivated by a commitment to promoting liberal democracy abroad, their push for war and empire was justified through lies and deception.

If this was happening under Trump, there would be no articles assigning blame on Bush or anyone else.

But Pravda received its orders from the Politburo to deflect and blame this on Trump and Bush.

We should never have set one boot on the ground in that forsaken land.

Bombing them until the rubble was bouncing was the only commitment we should have made there.

For 20 years the U.S. was unable to handle Iran’s involvement in Iraq and Pakistan’s duplicity in Afghanistan. Most of the Taliban are Pakistan and foreign countries - NOT Afghans. The refusal to deal with that started with George W Bush.

It doesn’t matter.

What matters is what is done NOW.

You can’t change the wake of the boat.

I would not blame the status in Korea today on Truman.

If after so many years, proper course corrections have not been made, it is not the fault of the first leader that began a path.

What has been mostly wrong with American Foreign policy has been an unwillingness of succeeding Congresses and Presidents to challenge earlier assumptions and correct course.

We have stupidly been risk adverse to mostly one thing - change in policy. The more often that error is repeated, the more of “the establishment” that has a vested interest in a status quo.

RINOs: The Bushes, McCains, Romneys, etc. They all claim (or used to claim) they're "conservatives." Yeah, right. They all probably figured, Oh Reagan considered himself a conservative and he was a very successful politician, so maybe it's a good idea for us to call ourselves conservatives, too.

Guaranteed that if you asked the Bushes, McCains, and Romneys to accurately define the word "conservatism," they couldn't do it.

George W. Bush don’t even open that Pandora’s Box right now.
Just return to your Chicken Shack and finish those paintings.

Trump had the BEST foreign policy for a US president in my life time (admittadly short) but he never started a new war of conflict. When did that last happen.

Bombing them until the rubble was bouncing was the only commitment we should have made there.

For better or for worse, he political will for bombing cowards who hide amongst women and children was drained out of America by the photo of nine-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phùc, in june of 1972.

It’s Biden fault but unless they are willing to say so then they can all go to hell.

I have no doubt that if Biden or Obama or Gore had been in office on 9/11 it would have been a disaster and we would have seen a lot more buildings come down.
