After Katrina, I had no power for a month. I wouldn’t wish a hurricane on anyone, but the loss of air conditioning is more than an irksome discomfort for us. Summer in New England is the kind of thing people in south Louisiana can only dream about right now. Anyway, good luck with the storm. Beware falling trees; they’re really dangerous.

So I’ve been thinking we should start a shortwave club.

“Beware falling trees”

The soil is still soaked from June/July rains.

No, that 90 is the % probability of tropical force winds (39+ mph) hitting your area. The probability of hurricane force winds (74+) looks to be betw/ 10-20% for LI.

Appears Jersey will escape the full force.

Let’s see how those Block Island offshore wind turbines hold up.

When Irene came through here we lost power for a week. That wasn’t too big a deal. What was a big deal was it put the town center under 8 feet of water and wiped out all ingress and egress to the community for 2 weeks. No food or fuel in, no way to get out (well a few of us had ways). This is shaping up to be nearly as bad. We’ve been getting absolutely pounded with rain all summer and had a tropical storm pass through yesterday. The eye is on track to go right over my house. The area is more saturated than I can remember. Things may go sideways pretty bad. I’m prepared I’ll survive but it’s shaping up to be no fun.

We are high elevation (N CT) and Irene had trees down all over the place here—and agreed that is what this looks like as well.

All our water heads down-hill into the valleys, and they are calling for six inches of rain on Sunday, so I am thinking every low elevation place in central or western CT will be flooded for sure.

Here in northern CT the last time we had a tropical storm we lost power for a week.

They tree trimmed the main arteries following that disaster, but if you live on a back road, you'll be losing power and likely won't be going anywhere unless you've got a chainsaw in the back of the truck.

I was in Hawaii when Sandy hit the NYC area. Even 6,000 miles away, that was about all the media talked about for days and days.

The trees grow very thick in Connecticut, even in urban areas. Despite the power companies constantly trimming (and past storms taking many of them down), they grow right back.

Last summer I had a microburst in my neighborhood and lost power for over a week. nearly every power line was taken down by fallen trees and I heard the sound of chainsaws for weeks during the cleanup. Now you would not even know a storm came through last year. There are many trees about to come down again.

Joe Bastardi is thinking Western CT will get the storm and that it will be moving slowly. Many hours of wind and rain with flash flooding and extended power outages.
Good luck FRiend!

Having lived for decades on the north Gulf coast of FL, aka hurricane alley, I know coastal flooding.

Like north FL, southern New England is a catcher’s mitt for storm surge.

I hope the people follow evacuation orders.
