There was always going to be a residual force left behind to unleash the hounds of Hell if the Taliban did what they did.

Not according to the agreement reached with the Taliban. All troops were to be gone May 11. Are you suggesting Trump would have sent them back in?

From another article on the same page as the link...Chris Miller - Secretary of Def. under Trump. The plan was not to pull out completely, butto leave some US forces there.

“the new government would allow US forces to remain to support the Afghan security forces and to fight terrorists.
“While serving on the National Security Council, Miller said it was determined that the US could continue to run counterterrorism missions in Afghanistan with only 800 military personnel.

“We did plenty of wargames on this and we knew what the minimal force structure was,” he said. “The number was 800. If this all goes bad, what is the minimal force structure needed to maintain [counterterrorism] strike and reconnaissance capability? We can do it for 800, 850.”

Ya gotta read the article...
It says he would have left a small contingent of special forces there to deal with the Taliban or the Afghanistan forces if they got out of line..
