The crisis in Afghanistan will resonate in Pennsylvania in the days and weeks ahead, as families fleeing the Taliban-led government will take refuge in resettlement areas here.
In Pittsburgh, Jewish Family and Community Services (JFCS) has begun to resettle one family and is preparing for two more families that recently evacuated Afghanistan, said Ivonne Smith-Tapia, director of refugee and immigrant services for the Squirrel Hill-based JFCS.
Thousands are evacuating the country following the withdrawal of American troops there, the subsequent collapse of the government and the Taliban takeover.
In southcentral Pennsylvania, Church World Service Lancaster has sent four employees to Virginia’s Fort Lee military base, the first U.S. stop for some of the Afghan interpreters and other refugees, said Rachel Helwig, development and communications coordinator for CWS Lancaster.
A satellite image released by Maxar Technologies shows crowds of people on the tarmac at Kabul's International Airport in Afghanistan as thousands of people converged on the tarmac and airport runways to evacuate. Once called “America’s refugee capital” by BBC News, Lancaster has a strong resettlement history and a network of agencies and organizations to get refugees into homes and jobs. CWS Lancaster, a resettlement agency, has informed its global organization that it will take on some of the Afghan people fleeing their country.
CWS Lancaster is approved this fiscal year to resettle 141 people. Since 1987, it has helped refugees from more than 27 countries.
“In Lancaster, we are ready, and we are prepared,” Helwig said. “Because we have a strong history in Lancaster, we have been able to adapt and move quickly.”
Pennsylvania’s Department of Human Services works with refugee service contractors in seven cities to provide refugee assistance. Those cities are: Allentown, Erie, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Scranton.

That was my suspicion from the get-go of the Afghan debacle - not incompetence, but theater. They don’t care if thousands die to further their agenda. Broken eggs for the omelette.
