"I saw a lot of the positive qualities that have defined his life in his art -- the heroic journey that comes from stumbling and falling and then rising up; his art is full of hope."

Reminds me of Tom Wolfe's book "The Painted Word" which, IIRC, captured the idea that, with modern art, the painting doesn't matter at all -- it's all about the Reviewer and the fancy phrases they decide to attach to a particular work. That, and that alone, determines whether the art is worthwhile.

I have artists who have very real careers who might not sell that much in dollar terms cumulatively over 10 years.

True enough...but none of those artists can arrange for someone to get a billion dollar government contract...or a Presidential pardon.
