Word leaked of the outcome of the meetings before Chamberlain's return, causing delight among many in London but gloom for Churchill and his supporters.

And I recall a young Lieutenant’s career ending over a lost CEOI during a field exercise. These were small booklets a bit larger than a pack of cigarettes, classified confidential, that contained call signs and radio frequencies for several days.

We always attached them to a chain around our necks for safekeeping. However, things happen when you’re in the field, and the chain could break. That’s why I kept my CEOI secured under my shirt.
