A prototype military transport aircraft made by Russia’s Ilyushin has crashed during a test flight, killing three people who were on board. A video of the incident shows the plane’s right engine flaming out before the aircraft tilts to the side and crashes near the Kubinka airfield outside Moscow.

The new light military transport plane, Il-112V, crashed in a forested area as it was coming in for a landing at the Kubinka airfield about 45 kilometers west of Moscow, spokespeople of the corporation told the Tass news agency. According to Russian news agency TASS, among those onboard was the Hero of the Russian Federation awardee Nikolai Kuimov. Kuimov had piloted the Il-112V during its first flight in 2019 as well.

Was it a C-130 knockoff?

....piloted the Il-112V during its first flight in 2019.....

The second flight two years after the first? How bad was the first flight?

More like a C-27J competitor.

The author isn't very clear on what a jet engine flame-out means.

In *theory* a twin can sorta fly on one engine.

Must have been more catastrophic than just losing power.

Probably fire burned through the control surface hydraulic system and pilots had no chance for recovery.

Landings and takeoffs are critical times to lose an engine.

That was my thought, too. Maybe the the big fire burned through control hydraulics on the right wing? It was flying level and stable with the big fire on the right wing for maybe 30 seconds, then lost lift on the right side and keeled over.

The pilot was doing his best to try and save the aircraft - rough.

The entire scene reminded me of the condition of America with Biden at the controls.

Probably right on the mark. At 0:40 it looks like the pilot kicked the rudder to get the wing up. You can see the yaw as the nose goes up but he has already lost it by then. Stalled it into a snap roll.

Prayers for the crew and their families.

Looked like a bad engine fire on #2 and they kept flying, long after they should have just found a flat spot or bailed out, fast. The fired burned through the aileron connections and they were without hope at that point.

That sounds about right. Sucks for the aircrew no matter the nationality.
