In early July, President Joe Biden informed the American people of the coming drawdown of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after a 20-year occupation. The evacuation would be “secure and orderly,” he said, with little chance of a Taliban takeover. “The likelihood there’s going to be the Taliban overrunning everything and owning the whole country is highly unlikely,” he said.
Little more than a month later, Biden has been proven wrong on all counts.
The Taliban took over Afghanistan on Sunday, entering the capital city of Kabul with no resistance after a two-week-long blitz in which multiple provincial capitals fell into the insurgents’ hands.
President Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Sunday, abandoning his fortress-like palace to the black-turbaned militants who roamed freely in his offices by the day’s end. U.S. diplomats, meanwhile, rushed to destroy sensitive documents and equipment at the sprawling U.S. embassy. The building’s American flag was lowered and flown aboard a helicopter to the Kabul airport, where U.S. personnel gathered for safety.
Like a long-anticipated death, Americans knew this day would come, but the collapse was so sudden and complete that it was stunning when it finally did. It’s a reality difficult to fathom after nearly two decades of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, more than 2,300 of its troops dead, more than 20,000 wounded, hundreds of thousands of Afghans maimed or killed and $2 trillion spent. On the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks this September, a Taliban flag will fly over Afghanistan.

.... I believe that The Biden Administration just handed the Taliban and the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan a 10,000 plus person sized hostage barganing chip ... And will soon be making huge demands of the BSA (Biden States of America) which is now run by paranoid Woke Snowflakes that will certainly melt under pressure and heat of this Real World Non Woke situation.
How to not botch it? The Trump administration had it going in the right way with negotiations. Both sides knew the end state -- no US troops and the Taliban in charge. The process would be orderly. You do this, we do that. US citizens drawn down before the military. I suspect the embassy in Kabul could have stayed open, but with a much smaller staff.
But, no. The military just popped smoke and disappeared. Key sites like Bagram Airfield were let go. All the time saying there is no way that the Taliban would take over before we got completely out.
Don't look to the commanders in the Pentagon. They wanted to stay forever.
Done properly, this withdrawl could have worked rather well.
I think Mr. Trump waa planning something similar, but I’ll bet he would have gotten more Americans safely out of that region first. This is now, or should I say this was being done in reverse order. Now, it does not matter. The bottom has fallen out.
The Taliban was always going to win, because that’s what the majority of Afghanis, outside of Kabul, wanted.

Pashtuns supported the Taliban. We disbanded the Northern Alliance, they are made up of other tribes. Probably should had left after we took out the Taliban and leave it to Northern Alliance to carve out a small kingdom out of Afghanistan which is not a country anyway.
She couldn’t even drag her ho butt to the border, I think she would be even worse than Xiden.
Botched is a bit of an understatement.
Many Democrats are praising Biden for making this tough, but necessary decision, while the other half are blaming Trump for making this deal last year. Seems like they haven’t quite got their messaging lined up yet. Or maybe they’re saying both and seeing which one works out after a couple of days.
The MSM has abandoned their Biden love fest.
