Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) is leading Republican gubernatorial nominee Glenn Youngkin with less than three months to go until the 2021 general election, according to a new poll shared with The Hill Friday.
The results from the Aug. 8-9 survey, conducted by research and analytics firm co/efficient showed that 47 percent of likely Virginia voters said they would vote for McAuliffe, while 45 percent said the same for Youngkin.
The Democrat’s lead is within the survey’s nearly 3-percentage point margin of error.
Roughly 8 percent of likely voters said they were still undecided on their choice between McAuliffe, who is vying for a second nonconsecutive term, and Youngkin, an ex-businessman who has attempted to label himself as a political outsider.
Virginia’s current governor, Ralph Northam (D), is not able to run in this year’s election. Virginia’s state constitution does not allow the governor to hold consecutive terms.
The survey, conducted among more than 1,200 likely general election voters, found that Virginia women were more likely to support McAuliffe, with 49 percent of female voters saying they would vote for him, compared to 42 percent for Youngkin.
McAuliffe also performed better in the poll among younger voters — 48 percent of voters ages 18 to 34 backed the Democratic nominee, while 37 percent of the demographic support his opponent.
The poll comes as the Virginia race has been shaken up in recent days by the nationwide debate over vaccine requirements and mask mandates.
McAuliffe openly supported Northam’s newly announced mask mandate on Thursday. The Democratic nominee and the rest of Democratic ticket are also requiring their staff to get vaccinated.
Meanwhile, Youngkin has railed against the mask mandate, and has argued that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is a personal choice. He called Northam's mask mandate “the first step towards returning to a full shutdown of our economy.”
A new ad released by the McAuliffe campaign on Friday took aim at Youngkin over how he has said he would approach the coronavirus pandemic, including his praise of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who has attracted criticism from Democrats and health experts for banning vaccine requirements and school mask mandates.
The Friday ad began with audio of Youngkin saying, “I think Gov. DeSantis has done a lot of really impressive things to lead.”
“And this is where I look to lead as governor,” he added.
The video ended with photos of Youngkin and DeSantis with the text “don’t let Glenn Youngkin do to Virginia what Ron DeSantis did to Florida."
I wonder if the Democrats are planning massive voter fraud?
Northern Virginia is the tail that wags the dog. Close suburbs of Washington, DC, are overwhelmingly Democrat registration, in contrast with most of the rest of the state. You win Arlington and Alexandria, you have a wide margin going into the rest of the state.
Virginia used to be a genteel place to live. It has become a repository for all the grim unrealities that fill many of the “blue” states across the nation.
The Demoncrats have MASTERED VOTE FRAUD!
This is the crown jewel in the Democrat fraud machine. The Republican establishment has no desire to take it down and it could be taken so easily. 95% of Virginia is Republican and the “Deep Blue” area is a facade. You have the elite power base that votes Blue but even the day to day government folks are republican. The scale of the fraud in NOVA is stunning, but people have been brain washed and just think this is their life... a comfortable one at that. Terry has no chance other than fraud and they are going to pull out all the stops and as we’ve seen our media is going to cover it up. We are living in a socialist oligarchy now, it is corrupt and that is why the nation is floundering. The most evil people in the world are running our country and doing the bidding of the CCP. Don’t think so...why isn’t Hunter Biden in jail for the child porn and bribery on his computer?
The democrats are scared so they are moving towards no in-person voting IMO.
I suppose in the dictionary definition of “fraud,” there is a picture of a democrat. 😀
THIS IS THE KIND OF POLL THAT PRODUCES THE FRAUD THROUGH THE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.
CLOSE ENOUGH...ALL YOU NEED IS A LITTLE TWEAK OF THE KEYS WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF VOTES NEEDED TO PUT THAT PUTZ IN THE SEAT OF POWER.
Geez, I wish Youngkin were more outspoken, vibrant, more aggressive, MORE ON OFFENSE.
Looks like that is not going to happen.
If Youngkin stays STRONG...LIKE TRUMP...HE WILL WIN.
If he starts equivocating, he loses.
STAY STRONG GLENN.
Last time around, McAullife was kept tightly in check by a conservative legislature. He’ll have no such constraints this time around. We’re going to see the real deal this time around and it won’t be pretty.
They have mastered Media fraud
Excellent post we need Mike Lindell’s folks up there to sort out the potential for fraud. If they can even cut the fraud in half its likely the PUnk can be beaten. We need to get the Punk to endorse slo’ Joe as well. That would be a big help.
We need a Trump rally just before the election. That will make the difference. Also we need to look for more voter fraud that has not been covered as widely as the rest.
OMG, you are SO RIGHT.
Do you think something like that could happen???
BIG BS.
“The video ended with photos of Youngkin and DeSantis with the text ‘don’t let Glenn Youngkin do to Virginia what Ron DeSantis did to Florida’.”
DeSantis won’t be able to show videos of Virginia’s School Boards cutting-off microphones; whereas, Youngkin can!
I think Steve Bannon’s home state is Virginia. Maybe he’ll be on this.
Squishy and not MAGA at all so far. Youngkin does not even identify himself as a Republican in his TV ads!! He is running his milquetoast campaign like he is an independent. Hey RNC WTH? I smell Nova RINO involvement...He's gonna loose ;(
