Cromwell was a brutal military dictator who brought about the deaths of 600,000-1000000 people. He was no hero by any stretch of the imagination.

The extent of “fatal persecution” of Catholics and dissenting Protestants by Henry VIII and Edward VI is generally exaggerated, as is the persecution of Protestants by Mary I. During the reign of Elizabeth the religiously motivated murder of Catholics and dissenting Protestants ticked up into the thousands, but pales in comparison to the scale of Cromwell’s slaughter.

If your ancestors were plantation settlers in Ireland (assuming you’re referring to the Portadown drownings) — they went for a swim less for being Protestants and more for decades of brutal occupation as a foreign, so-called elite ruling class, replete with dispossession, starvation, enslavement, religious persecution and massacres of the natives. The occupier victims of 1641, generally speaking, deserve to be mourned no more than Nazis killed by the Polish resistance.

I would also note I’m not a grouchy Irish apologist, my own ancestors were settlers in Ireland as well (later on, well into the 1700s) — German surname so I would assume there was some link to Hanover. Be that as it may, they had no right to be there brutalizing the Irish on their own land.

An ordinary decent criminal is a crook in it for the money, and isn’t looking to physically harm people. As opposed to a terrorist, serial killer, etc who are trying to harm or kill people.

He was anti catholic, but he didn’t differ from British monarchs much in that regard. For his time, he tried to save England from monarchy.

Thanks to Cromwell some of my ancestors of Irish persuasion were given free transport to Charlestown in the colony of South Colonia where they were given employment opportunities in the western uplands.

I was in London, Brighton and Cornwall in 2019. My nieces have been hiking over Devonshire to Bristol.

It is very safe

Plymouth shooting: Jake Davison named as gunman who killed five

Crane operator Jake Davison, 23, used a long-barrelled gun and kicked in the door of a house before shooting a woman, believed to be his mother, plus her five-year-old daughter in Plymouth last night.

The man, dressed in black and grey, then ran into the street and continued his rampage, firing randomly at passers-by on Biddick Drive as he made his way to a nearby park.

Davison also shot a young girl as she walked her dog with her family along with another innocent bystander.

After randomly firing at terrified passers-by, he then turned the gun on himself following the bloodbath just after 6pm yesterday.

“Save England from monarchy”????

England is built due to monarchy. Without the Wessex kings conquering Essex, Kent etc. and Danelaw there wouldn’t have been an Angle-land.

Cromwell set up a dictatorship that was worship than Chucky I’s rule. That’s why when he died, the public was quick to get Chucky part II

He apparently used a shotgun. Shotguns are not banned.

There are many 'guns are banned in UK' comments on this thread. Local media here in Devon this morning (I live in the same county) are saying that he used a shotgun. Shotguns have never been banned in the UK - in fact there are probably more legally owned shotguns here than at any time in history, because of the growing popularity of countryside shooting sports.

The shooter has been named locally as Jake Davison.

For his time, he tried to save England from monarchy.

Cromwell dissolved parliament and ruled just like a monarch. He is a perfect example of, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

First, the 1996 Dunblane Massacre, then the 2011 Cumbria killings, and now this . . . what the heck is going on on that side of the pond?

But I thought guns were banned in the UK.

That would come as a bit of a shock to my local gun shop:
