California's clean grid may lean on oil, gas to avoid summer blackouts

Aug 11 (Reuters) - California, struggling to balance its clean energy push with the need to boost tight power supplies and avoid rolling blackouts, will lean more on fossil fuels in coming weeks to keep the power on if scorching heatwaves stretch its grid.

The Golden State, which has among the world's most aggressive environmental policies, faces a potential supply shortfall of up to 3,500 megawatts during peak demand hours in the coming weeks. That is about 2.6 million households worth of electricity supply.

California's predicament demonstrates the challenges electricity grids face by moving away from natural gas and coal power while incorporating large amounts of wind and solar energy that only run when the wind is blowing or the sun is shining.

California has a goal of sourcing 60% of its power from renewable sources by 2030. Other governments crafting their own energy policies are watching closely.

Nationally, President Joe Biden aims to decarbonize the entire U.S. power sector by 2035. Utilities have said that goal may not be achievable without big breakthroughs in clean technology.

Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to fill that gap in part by allowing industrial energy users to run on diesel generators and engines, according to a recent emergency proclamation. The state says it is devising a plan to offset additional emissions through investments in air quality improvements.

It takes a lot to out **** up Illinois, but CA manages to do it. Get the conservatives out of CA (both of them), jump up and down on cue, and hope for the Big One to take care of all the slime sucking low life bottom dwelling media, big tech, and other like vermin in that poor remains of a once proud state. We can clean up afterwards (it’ll take a while - liberalism is vile) and remake it into something useful.

“Green” California already imports about 30% of its power from other states. And getting ready to close down the state’s last nuclear generation plant Diablo Canyon.

So, make prosperous people buy electric cars so they can use up the power they save by making poor people sweat in the heat. Something serious wrong with these people.

We should have “Recall a ‘RAT” every year and end blackouts.

nope not allowed- IF they cant sustain their idiotic green energy only nonsense without resorting to fossil fuels to save them- then they shouldn’t impose the requirements on others

Maybe that natural gas will be needed in other states. California now will just have to get in line with other states unless they want to allow companies to drill for their own California natural gas, like they used to.

Doesn’t the upflow from all the fires give “big wind” a turbo boost?

Biden begs Arabs for oil

Doesn't this just make you want to return to the good old days when the US was the largest domestic producer and bought no foreign oil. Those were the good old days of not even a year ago. Just goes to show just how fast these commies can F-up an economy.

I hate to say it, but it would not bother me one bit if their electric grid crashed and stayed down for months. And it very well could happen.

So, the Brit Nazis at Reuters admit that the California dingleberry politicians can’t supply energy with farts from rainbow unicorns.

Ahhh the truth is buried deep in the article.

“”We could be paying people to set their AC at 85 degrees on a hot day,” Shana Lazerow, legal director for Communities for a Better Environment, said in an interview.”

They will pay the “poor” but there is no way to force the set points in the AC units unless they go to network connected Tstats with no means of user overrides. So this is just more California commies being commies.

The upper middle class and wealthy have generac units by now or are fools if they don’t. You can have a whole house 12,000 watt natural gas with propane back up generac unit installed for under 5 grand total. When home prices are 500,000+ that’s a tiny fraction of the value for unlimited back up power should the grid go down. 500 gal of propane is week’s worth of back up power should the gas grid go down.
