In an interview with Estonia’s public broadcaster, Soomere advanced his vision for Estonia’s foreign policy, in which he praised Finland’s approach to its relations with Russia – which is commonly referred to as “Finlandization.” Finlandization is a policy whereby smaller nations submissively acquiesce to the dominance of larger and more aggressive neighbours.
During the interview, Soomere warned that “it is essential to avoid demonizing our neighbor and partner” without naming the government of Vladimir Putin by name.
Soomere continued by suggesting that “maybe I’m an idealist, but I think that the director of KAPO [Estonian Internal Security Service] has to call the director of the FSB [Russian security service] once a year.”

Neville Chamberlain would approve.
KAPO
Now why does that word seem familiar?
I love how Estonia followed Milton Freidman’s economic principles. But this makes me sad.
This guy is probably just looking at reality. They are no match for Russia militarily and who is going to back them up? The US under Biden?
“Neville Chamberlain would approve.”
So would Feels Up - that’s all we are now with Red China.
Soviet satellites falling back into orbit, just as China builds it’s B&R through Russia’s neighborhood.
Not really. Most of Estonia’s trade is with Russia. Anti-Russian stance and pro-Western orientation makes no practical sense. Ukraine and Georgia are perfect example, turned into banana republics with the economies in a crapper.
Didn’t Finland successfully resist getting taken over by the Soviets?
Maybe Estonia would benefit from being ‘more like Finland’ and less like a vassal of Brussels.
To a certain extent.
Check the history of the three Baltic republics vis a vis the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
Russia has always lusted for the European warm water ports of the Baltic...and they continue to do so.
Russian imperialism is alive.
That’s because the Baltic states has been historically Russian unless for brief period on 1918-1939 and the Russian Baltic ports has been developed there. Since 1991 upon the Russian secession from USSR, Russia has built and developed its own Baltic ports.
That is a reason for the depopulation and economic problems in the Baltic states, because their economies were historically geared to serve as a trading hub between Europe and Russia.
If they weren’t that anti-Russian post-independence, they had a chance to keep it. Now their value for Russia is nil.
“Russian imperialism is alive.”
Yes, true. Luckily Putin has guided Russia to a GDP of Spain’s size, so they can only take small and defenseless areas.
Russia will not invade the Baltics as NATO troops are there.

“Fully deployed by July 2017, NATO’s enhanced forward presence comprises four multinational battalion-size battlegroups, provided by framework nations and other contributing Allies on a voluntary, fully sustainable and rotational basis.”
