There Are More Than 50 Long-Term Effects of COVID-19
Real Clear Science ^ | August 10, 2021 | Ross Pomeroy

For many people who contract mild, moderate, or severe COVID-19, the disease's effects don't disappear when the infection fades. A systematic review and meta-analysis published Monday to the journal Scientific Reports found that 80% of cases result in at least one long-term symptom.

The authors of the report scoured more than 18,000 publications, seeking studies assessing the long-term effects of COVID-19 with at least 100 subjects. They found fifteen studies, which collectively followed 47,910 patients for as long as 110 days post-infection. They then pooled the data to discern the prevalence of chronic side effects.

"The five most common symptoms were fatigue (58%), headache (44%), attention disorder (27%), hair loss (25%), and dyspnea [difficult breathing] (24%)," the reviewers reported.

In total, they turned up 55 potential long-term symptoms. Other notable chronic effects included loss of taste (reported in 23% of cases), loss of smell (21%), cough (19%), sweating (17%), and hearing loss (15%).

Unfortunately, none of the studies included in the review were stratified by disease severity, so we don't know for sure if worse disease exacerbates long-term symptoms, though it seems likely.

"The results assessed in the present study are in line with the current scientific knowledge on other coronaviruses, such as those producing SARS and MERS," the authors wrote. "For example, studies on SARS survivors have shown lung abnormalities months after infection."

The authors also noted that the effects of long-term COVID-19 partly resemble those of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), a nebulous, controversial diagnosis that currently lacks an established cause. CFS sufferers are plagued by "severe incapacitating fatigue, pain, neurocognitive disability, compromised sleep... and worsening of global symptoms following minor increases in physical and/or cognitive activity," the reviewers described….

…"Given that COVID-19 is a new disease, it is impossible to determine how long these effects will last,"…

I work with an 18-year-old girl who had it in November and still doesn’t have her sense of smell back. It affects her taste. She told me that she’ll be eating something sweet like a brownie and all of a sudden it will taste like clam chowder. This is a nasty virus that affects the brain.

I call BS. I think this is the power of suggestion, “These are not the droids you seek”

It won’t happen when the illegitimate President is in bed with the ChiComs.

I was sick with the Wuhan for three weeks..Jun 30--Jul 21. I had fever and was weak. I had a sense of taste and smell but couldn't even get up to answer the phone. I lost 25 pounds and took acetaminophen and hydrocodone for the cough. The physician prescribed me the monoclonal antibody treatment and azithromycin, albuteral, and a medrol pack. I was taking ivermectin, D3, and zn before I got sick and was barely able to keep up with my meds.

I am still weak but can work in the yard and cannot take deep breaths without a pain located below my sternum. I write calligraphy and noted that my strokes and penmanship have been affected. I also am a diabetic and my blood sugar is all over the place but the last two days has been easier to regulate. During the height of the Wuhan Experience it was difficult to even take the oral meds for my diabetes and the glucose levels were low for almost ten days.

My wife was ill with it in June 2020 and reports she is just now feeling recovered from what she called “COVID brain” which I guess would be the attention deficit cited by the article. In a phone call this afternoon with a work colleague who’s entire family has been down with it for about 2 weeks, he reported continuing loss of energy/stamina with some shortness of breath. His 22-year-old son lost 25 pounds and was not overweight in the least before the illness.

He also told me about another work colleague who’s wife is having to learn how to walk again and exacerbated a pre-existing asthma condition. This other work colleague had pre-existing conditions from military service (TBI & PTSD) that have been problematic with the illness. It appears that surviving a bout of COVID comes with very individualized lingering effects for some and others come through with minimal effects after recovery.

I’ve been fortunate to avoid it to this point and I’m taking my zinc/Vitamin D supplements in the hope that stands me in good stead.

IF we had real leadership in the White House we could marshal the world against the chicoms. Sort of a new version of containment employed against the Ruskies in the Cold War.

We'd have to get every country to pull its manufacturing out of China, seize all assets owned by China in the respective countries and then fully embargo them.

We could and should bury them for what they did.

Where does one get HCQ and/or ivermectin if one’s local medical community won’t administer them?

My coworker came down with covid this past weekend. I’ve been taking C, zinc, D3, oregano oil caps, and using Robber’s Relief on wrists a couple times a day. Still waiting to see if I develop symptoms.

Me too. It might take a bit longer but those symptoms will likely gradually go away like the other ones did. Good luck to you.

I’ve had covid, 9 months ago. I’m still experiencing fatigue, and have difficulty breathing. It is almost like I’ve developed asthma.I had a mild case.

No info on treatments sought or used. I didn’t ask and he didn’t volunteer any info on either that or any preventative like zinc or Vitamin D.

Wow… you did good both with your personal support of your immune system before COVID-19 and the good treatment your wonderful doctor gave you after your diagnosis. Wish you well with your continuing recovery. God bless.
