Brazil Faces 10 Million Bag Loss Of Coffee: Preliminary Assessment
Nation & State ^ | 8-10-2021

A wicked cold snap and massive drought in July have devastated Brazil’s coffee belt. According to Bloomberg, preliminary reports show the South American country may lose millions of bags of arabica coffee.

A formal damage report of Brazil’s coffee belt is due in the coming weeks. The government report is set to show up to ten million bags (each bag weighing 132 pounds) of arabica coffee, or one-third of annual purchases by the U.S. may have been damaged.

The view is part of a government official who asked not to be named because the figures are internal data.

Days after the freak cold snap, we noted how coffee prices were erupting as estimated losses were 1-2 million bags – now the figures are much worse and suggest coffee prices will remain elevated.

It’s only a matter of time before coffee inflation, sparked by volatile weather, is passed on to U.S. consumers.

If the South Americans ever decided to form OCEC we’d be totally screwed. The country’s economy crashes without caffeine.

American West...... living in areas prone to massive periodic heat accompanied by wild fire
California....... farming in a region of periodic severe drought
Brazil...... farming coffee in a region of periodic coffee killing cold
China, Germany, India, etc...... living and doing business in periodic flood zones

Global human stupidity on display in 2021

First, lack of bacon will doom California, now lack of coffee (Starbucks) will kill Seattle (is is still alive?) and liberals everywhere.

(I’m a non-drinker of coffee, so flame away!)

World coffee production is about 170 million 60-kilo bags. So 10m bags would be a 6% decrease in supply. Anyone with economics background who knows how much price rise a 6% supply decrease typically causes?

132 lbs per bag just a reduction to be supplied by some other entity.

It will be an excuse to raise prices, not much else.
Personally, I will suffer no damage from reducing my daily coffee intake if I have to.

News of weather negatively affecting global coffee production was in the news LAST MONTH, as well. I contacted a friend in Guatemala who just started a coffee distribution web site. His response was that the locals told him that this type of news is generated every year or two. It’s a case of the boy crying wolf. Perhaps it’s true, this time!?

As always an excuse to raise prices. Coffee is an expendable item & a retailer may have to suffer with reduced sales awhile until coffee comes on sale again.

I've been posting about the probable rise in the price of coffee for months....I was just at the store, the price has not moved an inch in at least a year.
