The Taliban Has Seized 2 More Provincial Capitals In Afghanistan As U.S. Exit Nears
NPR ^ | August 8, 2021 | DAVE MISTICH

The Taliban seized two provincial capitals in Afghanistan on Sunday, according to Afghan officials, the latest to be overtaken by the insurgents since the start of a sweeping military offensive in May.

With the capture of Taleqan, the capital of the northeastern province of Takhar, and the strategically important city Kunduz just hours earlier, the Taliban now have a hold on four provincial capitals across the country.

In Kunduz, fighting between Taliban insurgents and Afghanistan's government forces took place Sunday near the governor's office and police headquarters, provincial council member Ghulam Rabani Rabani told The Associated Press.

Rabani said the Taliban was now in control of the two buildings. They also seized a prison building in Kunduz, according to Rabani.

With a population of about 375,000, Kunduz is considered a major hub for economics and culture. Its location — roughly 200 miles from the capital of Kabul — also makes the city a significant military prize.

Takhar also has particular significance to an alliance of northern anti-Taliban fighters, who joined the U.S.-led coalition to oust the Taliban at the start of the war in 2001. Two Afghan lawmakers told the AP that the capital fell to the Taliban earlier Sunday.

They were fighting when Alexander the Great invaded 2400 years ago; hence you have the city name of Kandahar which translates into Alexander. We gave them 20 years, trillions of dollars, untold amounts of equipment and the lives of thousands of our best young men and women. If they can’t step up to the plate after all this, its perhaps that they don’t want to and we are better off being out of there, never to return.

“Twenty years post 9/11 and THIS!”

Oh, stop. OBL, hundreds of his officers and tens of thousands of Al Qaeda and Taliban were killed during OEF.

Operation Freedom’s Sentinel (2015 - ) was the wasted time and effort imo.

Bottom line: Afghanisan won’t be hosting another international terrorism symposium for quite some time. We spoke their language. They will abide.

No, I’m mostly serious that anyone invading Afghanistan should not go in there absent the will to kill them all. For 4,000 years those tribal troglodytes have ground up army after army. Each in turn thought they could pacify the cockroaches and every one of them was wrong.

The only rational thing to do is build a wall around the country and contain the infection lest it spread.

Exactly. And the people don’t seem to be interested in fixing their country.

Using just B-52’s and C-130 Spectre gunships (as we are doing now), how would you free these provincial capitols from the Taliban?

There are no U.S. military ground troops left to fight in the towns.

Maybe we can drop American Democrat politicians into these towns. They will make the towns uninhabitable in no time.

Basically they’re letting the Taliban take control again and we’re just focused on getting our people out of there safely. Afghanistan people overall prefer their own people run their Islamic nation rather than any others...even if it means the Taliban. They want their backward and tribal communities back....so have at it.

The “Authories” of Afghanistan had over 20 years of direct assistance from the USA. They still never managed to build a strong military defense? One has to wonder if they even wanted to build any defense that would effectively repel
the Taliban?

Better to let China move in and try to wipe out the Taliban, then fail miserably.
