"Thousands of prospective drivers are waiting for their HGV tests due to a backlog caused by lockdown, while many existing ones have left the UK after Brexit."

Oh my, a big part of it seems to be a clerical issue.

"The problem has been exacerbated by Covid, with drivers having to go into self-isolation amid the so-called 'pingdemic'."

Oh, and a technical snafu.

The fact that government is the logical place for the mentally challenged shows its ugly face again. And if one is really challenged and also has a big ego, we get socialist/communist governments.

And the beat goes on.

2,000 versus 100,000 ?!?

So there will be a 50,000 reduction in deliveries ?!?

OMG.

I have suggested, more than once, the way to stop the madness is to stop shipping food into the cities. We would quickly see how much fun it would be for city dwellers to begin to starve to death.

The heartland produces the food. The cities die without groceries arriving there.

Truck drivers can bring a nation to its knees quickly.

Most large cities in the USA have sea ports and can import food from all over the world. Sightly more expansive but do-able.

2,000 to fill in for 100,000?

To misquote Churchill, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Is California the heartland? Because it’s the biggest agricultural state.

The same has happened here.
Fuel delivery tankers for example. When they locked down the country, a lot of the drivers near retirement took early out and said piss on em, we aint coming back.

Cut CA off from imported foods and see how long that works. Other states can ramp dairy production back up and we can live without strawberries, almonds, and wine.

So you’re a Brit. You need money, and isolating is not a big deal for you. Just go hang with someone who has been pinged, then collect your money! No wonder there are so many people getting pinged.

California is the fifth largest cattle and beef producing state. Over 90% of lettuce produced in the United States comes from California. I’m not trying to start a food war, just pointing out that California is more than just LA and SF.

Your reality post above is why we did our Costco order 2 hour yesterday, a few days ahead of time.

We had one item out of 16 out of stock.

Then, we checked out many items we have ordered in the past from Costco and a huge % were out of stock. It was mainly food items.

Normally on Tuesday or Wednesday, I do a trip to our local farmer’s stand and then followup with our small local chain store. I will do that today shortly after noon.

Maajid Nawaz issues warning to Starmer (opposition leader) over ‘embracing Blair’s legacy’

... He went on to explain why Labour would nosedive if Mr Starmer stuck by the policy: “You’re championing the same man who used the war on terror...to curtail our civil liberties” he pointed out.

Maajid continued by warning that “the same man (Tony Blair) is trying to use the Covid emergency to introduce vaccine passports,” and with low take-up in ethnic minority communities, would result in vaccine apartheid.

“I stood by concerned Labour party members and the Jewish community against Jeremy Corbyn, I ask you now not to betray us and sell us down this road where, in the name of emergencies, civil liberties can be stripped away.”

“It’s ethnic minorities that suffer again” Maajid warned.

He predicted that if Blairism was to reappear in Labour, “we’re going to once again use power to force your subservience.

“If you want us to adopt that, you’ve lost me completely”
