Seriously, it looks like we're about to be flooded with a plethora of variants.

SARS-COV-2 mutates constantly. Researchers have the ability to quickly sequence samples to reveal strains making some foothold in the wild. They have identified thousands of strains. They couldn't do that in the not too distant past, so you didn't hear of it.

Researchers don't make up the "variants." They talk of strains, lineages, and clades. Delta is clade 21A, lineage B.1.617.2.

The WHO started to assign Greek letters to clades they considered "of interest" or "of concern." So they refer to clade 21A as Delta, 21G as Lambda. See CoVariants dot Org.
