Apple is reportedly developing a tool that would scan your iPhone photos for child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including the media content related to child pornography. The new development, which is expected will be announced soon, would be implemented on the client side — on the user’s device — to look for specific perceptual hashes and send them directly to Apple servers if they appear in a large quality. The idea is that by carrying out the checks on the user’s device, it protects their privacy though it is not clear whether this system could be misused in some way.
I’m skeptical and it doesn’t pass the smell test. Tim Cooke has been hard-line against Gov’t policies on privacy invasion and knows this would be a business killer for Apple if it was verified as true. I’ll wait to see it in something more substantial than the Twitter-cesspool.
In other news, hundreds of senators and congressmen have been quietly trading in their iPhones for Android products . . .

It’s one thing to scan images that go through their servers (email) or reside on their servers (iCloud). Absolutely NO way will I operate a device that’s actively monitoring me for wrong think.

If they can monitor images, they would also be able to INSTALL images. Yikes...
Well, it’ll make the FBI’s job that much easier. Not the arresting of bad guys part of the job. Not even sure they’re still in that business.

Someone gets on their bad side and then “all of a sudden” they get caught with all this child porn on their phone.
The FBI tells the press, “Hey, we found all this child porn on this guy’s phone and took him down for it. Yeah yeah, been under investigation for a while now. Whodathunk it, right? Any bearing on the fact he’s been a vocal adversary of the government? Nah, what do you think this is? China? Geez.”
Either that or, “Hey, we found all this child porn on your phone. You should probably do what we tell you to do from now on or this is going to get released to the press. Then we’ll arrest you for it.”
That part of the job...
