Floyd school board suspended over mask vote (New Mexico Gov. "Lockdown" Lujan Grisham orders removal)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | August 5 ,2021 | Susan Montoya Bryan

A rural New Mexico school board was suspended by the state Public Education Department on Wednesday for defying Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s mask mandate for children as schools prepare for classes to resume this month and COVID-19 cases continue to rise again.

The five-member Floyd school board voted last week to make masks and social distancing optional and reaffirmed its decision in another vote Monday despite warnings from state officials that they could face suspension or other enforcement actions.

The district’s superintendent has been ordered to report directly to outgoing state Education Secretary Ryan Stewart. Stewart said in a memo to the board members that the state agency has a responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all staff and students.

The tiny town of Floyd – which has a little over 100 residents – for the last week has become the epicenter of the mask fight in New Mexico. Top Republicans on Wednesday aligned themselves with the defiant school board, which serves about 225 students in eastern New Mexico near Portales.

Republican Sen. David Gallegos of Eunice, who serves on another local school board, said the Floyd board did what they were elected to do. “They represented the best interests of the children in their district,” he said. “This gross violation of local authority is disrespectful to the students and families of Floyd and may even be a violation of New Mexico law.”

Floyd is close to the Texas state line where masks are optional. BTW, Senator and Doctor Rand Paul last night verified again that cloth masks let greater than 95% of virus particles through. Control trumps science in Blue states.

What’s the point in having a school board if it can be “suspended” at the whim of the state?

Question for NM Freepers. Under what statutory authority was this [presumed elected] school board suspended? I did not find it in the article.

10 years ago, I would have thought that a politician would not due such a thing without legal authority. Now I assume the opposite, that no authority to do so exists and the politicians are just grabbing power and hoping no one notices or pushes back.

that would be in a leftest state only. In a GOP state like Florida, they get to do what they want.

What legal authority does the state have to sack a local school board? If they have that authority, why??

Correction, I had it wrong. Just listened to Rand Paul excerpt at this thread Rand Paul slams 'obscene' op-ed on unvaccinated, calls Fauci's advice 'very dangerous'

He went on to say that there’s no correlation between a mask mandate and reduction in incidents of the virus. ... Most people are wearing cloth masks; 97% of virus-sized particles go through cloth masks... Cloth masks do not stop the disease; it's terrible advice if you are taking care of a person sick with covid - it can kill you! Sen. Rand Paul: Nothing more 'authoritarian' than no-fly list for unvaccinated people

Its weird then. My husband had Covid last November. I had to drive him in our little car to urgent care at the outset and to the hospital 7 days later. In between I brought him food and drink (Not that he wanted to eat much of anything) with only a mask to protect me.

“..school board was suspended by the state Public Education Department.. “

Does the law actually permit the suspension of a duly elected school board??

Fully-Vaxxed (99%) Gibraltar Sees 2500 PERCENT SPIKE in COVID-19 Cases Per Day, Initiates New Lockdowns

Did you practice proper hygiene while taking care of him? If you did, that and your immune system did more to protect you than a cloth/paper mask did.

Yeah I was doing diligent hand washing and sanitizer but I didn’t go to the extremes some did with wiping down all their groceries or keeping them in the garage for days. And wore those disposable masks. At the time I thought they were good enough. But sitting right next to him in the vehicle while he coughed and shivered....it’s weird. They were saying how contagious it was but I guess not cause now we hear how much more contagious this new variant is.

There is a fine line between diligent and crazy. Diligence comes from knowledge and crazy comes from fear. There is no need to fear something that has a mortality rate that is statistically the same as a bad flu year. The government, big pharma, the media, big tech and the army of COVID Karens they have created would have you think otherwise.

I know it means nothing coming from am internet stranger; you did a good job with the hubby.
