More than 2.9 million Americans are still on traditional state unemployment benefits as the number of people seeking weekly new claims appear to have settled at a level higher than previously hoped, the feds said Thursday.

Continuing claims fell by 366,000 from just over 3.26 million the week before, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department. That figure stood at almost 16 million at the same time last year, in the thick of the pandemic.

Continuing claims have fallen significantly since peaks seen in 2020, but the figure remains about twice as high as pre-pandemic levels.

I drove by a construction site yesterday. At least half the workers had white hair and looked older than me. (I’m slightly younger than dirt, but not much.)

Many People no longer want to work, they want a government check. We’ve always had that population, but now it has grown by leaps and bounds.

I know a lot of suburban women sold their souls to the democrat part, mostly over a single issue, and probably would vote for a red-faced man with horns, but I wonder how many other old school democrats, the non-radicals like the blue dogs or union democrats etc, have forced themselves to subscribe to permanent welfare to able bodied young people?

At the end of the day it comes down to this: Who is John Galt?

It’s a part of the reason I moved from Seattle to rural Kentucky 10 years ago this month. And I bought it two years before Obama was elected.

The writing has been on the wall in big neon letters getting ever brighter since 1971*, the year before I graduated from High School.

*the year the entire western world’s monetary system disconnected from gold.

Two years = two weeks. I bought it two weeks before Obama was elected.

I’ve never understood the mentality of being OK with staying on unemployment at near poverty levels of income. I like to buy a few nice things, take the wife and kids out for a good meal, take a vacation. You can’t do that on welfare. What a miserable way to live life.

I am working 80+ hours a week at my business. can’t find help at any price.. The people applying don’t have drivers licenses (a requirement for what I do) and/or social security numbers..

Once in a blue I’ll get a semi qualified person who is either an idiot or is blowing the interview so they can stay on unemployment.

I offered a few the job and they never showed up.

While on vacation, went to a pizza place. They had the owner’s whole family was working with no servers. They said nobody would come to work.

Then at the beach we went to a water park—about 20% of the rides were open, not enough life guards.

Went to a restaurant, only one cashier and two cooks with a line of about thirty people. They couldn’t find help.

Went to a bank. There was one teller for the inside, one for the outside. And it is the busiest branch the entire bank has. The line was enormous.

The only explanation I can see is the government is out-competing private business by handing out money it does not have. It is if they are intentionally trying to crash the economy. I am not alone in this viewpoint.

Saw an argument on our NextDoor site today, initiated based on the evictions moratorium news.

Seems that there are plenty of people who think that it is better and acceptable to be on unemployment and have free rent than to actually work. And this is in a mostly conservative, suburban area.

No excuse for this as pretty much every business I go to has HELP WANTED signs.

My daughter runs a private company with 3-4 different divisions. She has ads running on all the recruiting websites and is only getting 1-2 resumes per job listing. She has resorted to hiring everyone she knows....regardless. She offered me a job yesterday. lol

I'm of the same mindset. I could never settle for the pittance of unemployment checks even if I was inclined to be a deadbeat. It's nice to get a steady paycheck, pay all your bills and have plenty left over to save, spend on other things, and fund your retirement.

Speaking of retirement, I could retire today and be assured of at least 30 years of comfortable living but I would need to cut back a bit budget-wise. I'd rather not even do that. I'll keep working for the extra money as long as I can.

Since Bidet is such a dictator like Roosevelt, why not put all those unemployed to work on CCC projects like he did in the 30s. Seemed to work for the National Parks build out.

.....there is a 40’ x 14’ billboard (today) on RR 2147 West (In Texas) advertising that a certain restaurant at a certain Marina will give a $5,000.00 hiring bonus for workers in a Snack Bar.

This is but one example of how “unemployment” is driven by socialism practiced by Democrats and RINO’s. The so called “Covid subsidy” should be stopped immediately.

A local factory that makes vending machines is offering $2000 hiring bonus.

Some cheese factories offering $1000. Honeywell has signs out hiring.

Plenty of help wanted signs posted on Windows at local stores.

Pizza joint still closed down due to lack of workers.

I got by on a hundred a month in the army for awhile with clothing, shelter and food provided just like on welfare now. The only difference, I did not get to stay in bed till noon, do drugs all day and evening and have freedom of going about. PUT THE BUMS in some kind of uniform, CCC, WPA, I don’t care what. We don’t have a free country anymore anyway so why make believe voting counts or the constitution even matters. We have some nitwit POS mummy saying to all come on in while lambasting governors who say whoa, we are not going to follow your rules because it only applies to citizens.

I checked out of a hotel yesterday. 40 percent of the rooms are unavailable, since they don’t have housekeeping staff.

A restaurant popular with the locals is next door. He’s closed 1 1/2 days per week, no labor available.
