Well that’s one way to get around an eviction moratorium.
27 years - does New Hampshire have a 30 year law on adverse possession? That may explain the timing.
I read in another story that the hermit and the present owner’s father had made a deal so the hermit could live on the land for as long as he wanted. What the deal was, was never specified. The son was using the property as a retirement nest by selling lumber harvested from it. Everything was going well until the city stepped in and told the son that the hermit’s place had to have a septic system installed because it was so close to the river. They tried to tell the city it was a hunting and fishing camp, but that didn’t work. The son didn’t want to pay the cost to install the system, so the city started putting pressure on him. That’s when everything started going south. Had the city not poked their nose into this thing, the son would’ve just kept on with the way things were going. That’s what I got out of the story anyway. Could be wrong.
I’ve known Europeans who have two cars, went on vacations and had no indoor plumbing. I guess if you are use that lifestyle it’s not such a big deal for some people. I sure would put in a toilet and shower before I got a second car, though.
I predict a lot more squatters being burning out in the next few months...

But he's not living by his own means. He, his gardens, his septic system, and his building are living in the middle of somebody's timber farm. And yes, it is a farm. I own one. It is worked, manicured, and fertilized on the schedule of years and not months, but it is a working farm. Having someone take up residence in it is costly. How would you like this guy to take up residence in the middle of your wheat or corn field?

The Libs and do gooders need to hire a lawyer and litigate Lidstone’s “rights”. Potentially, he does have a claim on the grounds of Adverse Possession.

It seems a bit counter-intuitive, but under the legal theory of adverse possession, if someone trespasses onto land continuously and improves the land over a period of time, title to the land may eventually pass to the trespasser. Adverse possession laws are intended to promote the productive use and maintenance of the land and discourage letting land go to waste. In general, to obtain title to land through adverse possession, a trespasser must satisfy four requirements:
He or she must enter or use the land without the permission of the owner;
He or she must actually be present on the land, as well as treating and using it as if it were his or her own;
He or she must use the land in an open and obvious way; and
He or she must use the land for a continuous period of time, without sharing possession with others (unless it would constitute adverse possession by tenants in common).
To give an example, someone who publicly inhabits a foreclosed house for a certain period of time, improves the property, and pays taxes may claim legal residence. In Texas, the landowner has 25 years in which to challenge the claim — and then title passes to the trespasser.

A couple of things about this case, the man according to the article had been on the land for nearly 30 years and people knew he was there because the land was riverfront and people passing by on boats saw him on a regular basis.
I’m not debating you other than to see if Adverse Possession applies in New Hampshire.....

From what I read, he had permission from the previous owner, and the current owner didn’t mind until some bureaucrat started harassing HIM about it. The entire situation was created by the government by some pointy-headed drone. I wish the drone’s house had been the one to burn.

The putative owner is 87 years old. So it could be his greedy wannabe heirs.
The story also said he had worked as a woodman. Some people are able to do manual work into fairly old age. Maybe there is a sawmill nearby.
I have read about suspicious fires around here over the years in the San Fernando Valley.
There was a turn of the century old west train station that was not being used and was then a rundown building in Canoga Park. There was a group of people who wanted to preserve it. There were others who wanted to build a strip mall. This was I think in the 1990’s.
It mysteriously burned down.
There is now a strip mall there that is always packed with customers.
There was a city golf course clubhouse in Sepulvada area that needed to be modernized but the arguments was there was not enough money.

A small printing company that as far as I know printed up among things like campaign posters, pamphlets etc for the democrats not far up the block from where I live in Canoga Park and whose parking lot out front had the expensive europeon type cars. It mysteriously burned down.
The news article I read said arson. I suspected insurance fraud.
A few years ago a homeless bum set fire to a strip mall twice on Victory blvd.
Some people like to see the world burn for money and just because.
