…. Being a young Black woman — which, in American life, comes with its own built-in pressure to perform — entails much more than meets the eye, according to several Black women and advocates who spoke to The Associated Press.
The Tokyo Games show signs of signaling the end of an era — one in which Black women on the world stage give so much of themselves that they have little to nothing left, said Patrisse Cullors, an activist and author who co-founded the Black Lives Matter movement eight years ago.
“Black women are not going to die (for public acceptance). We’re not going to be martyrs anymore,” said Cullors, who resigned her role as director of a BLM nonprofit foundation in May. “A gold medal is not worth someone losing their minds. I’m listening to Simone and hearing her say, ‘I’m more important than this competition.’”
She added: “Activism and organizing is just one contribution that I’ve given. And we all need to know when enough is enough for us.”
Biles’ message also resonated with Whaley, who co-created an event series in New York City called Brooklyn Recess to preserve the culture of Double Dutch, a rope jumping sport popular in Black communities. Early on, Whaley and co-creator Naima Moore-Turner found they were talking a lot about a mental health component to their events.
“People will say, ‘Let Black women lead, because they know,’” said Whaley, a 32-year-old freelance race and culture writer.
“It’s like, (Black women) know not because we’re some sort of special humans who are supernatural,” she said. “It’s because we live at those intersections where we have no choice but to know.”

Intersections … yeah, people use that term these days should expect raised eyebrows.
Don’t even use Woke-like language if you don’t want to be seen as Woke.
Intersectionality does in fact speak to “we’re some sort of special humans who are supernatural” but only as you check off more and more boxes on the list. So it’s not automatic specialness but cumulative specialness. And her saying black women have to be aware of this only potentially enforces the further Woke view that there are legitimate attitudes and sell-out attitudes for people to hold.
Again, I’m not saying she would be on board with this but if she isn’t she needs to express her views differently.
What a bunch of crap, she decided to make herself be the focal point of the event after she made an error.
So instead of just saying I screwed up, she made an excuse and quit.
Nothing else.
And in 4 years the next “phenom” will be in the headlines and she will fade into obscurity.
Of course THIS chick is as a former BLM honcho may be 100% a Trained Marxist, Woke and the works.
Pretty sure that Olympic Athletes entire existence (until they can’t do it at the necessary level) is all about that one chance. How stupid are these “commentators” to argue that it is fine and even encouraged to just toss it all aside. Yeah, That’s going to help black athletes everywhere /s

Sing it, Sista. Black women must be so sick and tired of the hard bigotry of high expectations. Everyone expects them to be superwomen: smart, talented, beautiful, hardworking, genteel. Like if you hear about a nuclear physicist who’s raising 6 kids while spending her weekends running marathons and volunteering in soup kitchens, I just assume we’re talking about a black woman.
I guess only black women Olympic athletes push themselves so hard that they have little or no time for anything else.
White women and Asian women that compete in the Olympics don’t have to work hard and can spend all day hanging out with friends.
White men don’t even need to work and are simply given medals because of “white privilege”
Good point. Weed can exacerbate mental health issues. They should also give up 40s and alcohol in general. Not good for your mental health either.
