Bacon may disappear in California as pig rules take effect

Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic.
That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items — bacon — hard to get in California.
“Our number one seller is bacon, eggs and hash browns,” said Kim, who for 15 years has run SAMS American Eatery on the city’s busy Market Street. “It could be devastating for us.”
At the beginning of next year, California will begin enforcing an animal welfare proposition approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018 that requires more space for breeding pigs, egg-laying chickens and veal calves. National veal and egg producers are optimistic they can meet the new standards, but only 4% of hog operations now comply with the new rules. Unless the courts intervene or the state temporarily allows non-compliant meat to be sold in the state, California will lose almost all of its pork supply, much of which comes from Iowa, and pork producers will face higher costs to regain a key market.

This farmer had a pig who was a real good worker.
Got up early, fed the chickens, watered the horses, weeded the garden.
All this while sporting a peg leg.
The farmer was asked about the peg leg by a reporter doing a farm-interest story.
Well, Son, when they work that hard, you don’t eat them all at once.

So California gets to dictate how pigs are raised in Iowa? No, but California thinks they can ban the sale of pork products raised in other locations not to the California desired specification. Not sure about the legality of that, I'm sure it will be a jobs program for lawyers.

I thought it went downhill after Reagan left to become President and went on to screw the entire US commercial tuna seine fleet based in CA, driving the industry out of the country, destroying my nascent career as a skipper of a new tuna seiner.

The Eighties were the last big party for Cali. Great music, lots of work and just a whole lot of fun. I settled in SoCal after active duty in the Eighties. So much fun. You could run into celebrities and even talk over a beer. Traveled up and down the State despite being broke half the time. Participated (not acted) in a couple of movies as part of a crowd. Lots of fun, free beer and food. Left near the end of the Eighties for work. Returned in the mid Nineties, things had already begun to change. Old neighborhoods and hang outs gone or dilapidated. Old apartment complex was overrun with drugs and my children's former grade school looked like a low security prison. Almost all my friends and acquaintances had moved out of State or to the Eastern parts of the State. Already migrating to get away from drugs, crime and illegals. Really sad to see.

I lived in CA a long time ago—one of the old-timers explained to me that the mountains were beautiful—the problem was the valleys.

What fraction of U.S. hogs are raised in California?? There is this thing called “interstate commerce”. This will just be a bonanza for hog farmers in other states.

The black market in bacon will flourish. They already check you for illicit fruits and vegetables when you cross the border into California. They'll just add bacon to the list.
