Interesting study came out earlier this week.
• Psychologists at the University of Pennsylvania conlcude from a study that trusting science is not enough. Without critical thinking, people who claim to “trust science” can be gullible (J Exp Soc Psych. 2021;96:104184 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2021.104184). They ran four experiments (N = 532, N = 472, N = 605, N = 382) with online U.S. samples introduced false claims concerning a (fictional) virus created as a bioweapon, mirroring conspiracy theories about COVID-19, and carcinogenic effects of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Participants who trust science are more likely to believe and disseminate false claims that contain scientific references than false claims that do not. Reminding participants of the value of critical evaluation reduces belief in false claims, whereas reminders of the value of trusting science do not. We conclude that trust in science, although desirable in many ways, makes people vulnerable to pseudoscience.
Exactly.
Why do those the trust the federal government and the cadre of scientists not trust GMO foods, growth hormones for chicken and beef, pesticides for produce?
Why such a push for organic products by liberals?
@ post 25. I trust the scientific method indeed. For now, anyway, I don’t trust the ‘scientists’.
a study that trusting science is not enough. Without critical thinking, people who claim to “trust science” can be gullible>>> There is nothing to trust. It is true or false. If it is a theory then we wait and see. Gravity is not a theory. Jump off a bridge you go down. Same as jumping off your curb.
