The most hostile work environments I ever experienced were public schools in Washington, D.C. and in Cleveland. I interned in DCPS (District of Columbia Public Schools) and crisscrossed CMSD (Cleveland Municipal School District) as a substitute teacher.
On several occasions, a teenager got in my face and “bucked” at me as if he were going to punch me. Many more kids, some as young as seven or eight, cussed me out. I knew better than to take these almost daily attacks personally. Still, no one should have to endure such a hostile work environment.
I find Black juvenile delinquency alarming. As a six-foot-two Black man from Anacostia in Southeast D.C., I don’t speak from fear.
I’m calling out Black juvenile delinquency from a place of loving concern. Kids should happily anticipate their grown-up future. They should exude play and possibility. No child should feel doomed by the “school-to-prison pipeline.” They shouldn’t hate the world and themselves most of all.
Miserable children are a painful thing to watch.
Conventional wisdom attributes Black youthful rage to the usual sociological suspects: poverty, crime, segregation, etc. It tends to scapegoat their single mothers and to decry their “culture of poverty.” It tends to frame them as “super-predators.” Sometimes it claims that naturally-lower IQs account for their achievement gap. In short, conventional wisdom blames the victim.
For a better explanation of Black juvenile delinquency, read Michael Brunner’s Retarding America: The Imprisonment of Potential (1993). The Department of Justice commissioned Brunner to study the problem of juvenile delinquency. Although he doesn’t focus on race as such, we can nevertheless apply his report on education and delinquency to inner-city Black youth.

The fix for all this crime, is easy.
Break the law, pay the price. No exceptions, black, white, red, yellow, whatever.
The only problem is pure political ambition, fear and greed at the highest levels.
It may be up to “we the people” to take measures into our own hands.
Perhaps if they took it seriously instead of brushing it under the rug by euphemistically using the term “teens” and then screeching nonstop hyperbole about roving bands of shaven headed white supremacists wandering about like the terminator robot indiscriminately mowing down every black person in america, things would suck less
I haven’t heard that phrase used in a long time. That is what they are.
Inner city schools and Black juvenile delinquency. Ghetto Schools and Hispanic juvenile delinquency. Slum schools and juvenile delinquency.
I thin the first memory of any of this was a movie I saw around 1954, when I was 12 years old. “Blackboard Jungle.”
That is 67 year of listening to the “experts” tell us about the problem and what THEIR solution(s) are.
If at the age of five one child knows 2000 words and another child knows 500 words, the only way to close the achievement gap is for the student who is less prepared to learn, to learn more faster, and the student who is more prepared to learn, To learn less more slowly. To learn less more slowly.
While there are outliers, it is a mathematical impossibility.
This article is a step, the only step that would work. However, I have become convinced that the purpose of the schools is to make children stupid. I say this as a certified teacher with a masters degree in education.
We have been teaching feelings rather than logic for Close to four decades. As long as The education system is full of cheerleaders for failure, we’re going to keep down this road to perdition.

Heckuva term there, Dickens, and one that describes our “progressive” world, from the Covid policy to Simone’s crash-and-burn, to “mostly peaceful” riots that destroy entire neighborhoods.

I used to offer Bible studies for teen girls in a juvenile detention center. Although they were interested in the topic, and excited to read from the Bible, they were barely literate. Their written prayer requests were atrocious. Interesting enough, the longer they stayed in detention, the more their literacy rates improved.

Very true. Unfortunately, the congress critters in Mordor on the Potomac LOVE to subsidize failure and ignorance. That results in job security for the congress critters.
The number ( not %) of single parent white families is more than single parent black families. The kids from those families are similarly at risk.
Good Lord, how tough is it to teach children how to read? Isn’t this accomplished in the first grade? Seriously, are they actually not being taught to read, right off the bat? SMH
It better be sooner than later.
It’s worse than that. They teach with some version of “whole word” or “blended” or whatever the latest name for it which messes kids up for reading, leading to lots of subsequent dyslexia diagnoses.
Simple phonetics is of course the way to go and they steadfastly refuse to go that route.
Oh, and have you seen the common core math standards? They do the same now with math, too.
Too many “moms” drop out several kids while the “daddys” are in the wind screwing some other leg spreader.
And yet the author got it so wrong in his only other article at the site. Go figure.
