The Oklahoma Sooner and Texas Longhorn athletic programs have requested an invitation to become members of the Southeastern Conference.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey received the request Tuesday and announced there will be a meeting between the conference presidents and chancellors to vote on sending an invitation to the colleges.
NEWS | Statement from @SEC Commissioner @GregSankey: pic.twitter.com/6K9xW2sJ2o — Southeastern Conference (@SEC) July 27, 2021 A three-fourths majority vote, or in this case 11 of 14, is required to approve the invitation. If OU and Texas get the green light, they’ll join the SEC in July 2025.
“We believe that there would be mutual benefit to the Universities on the one hand, and the SEC on the other hand, for the Universities to become members of the SEC,” University of Texas President Jay Hartzell and Oklahoma University President Joseph Harroz Jr. wrote in a letter dated July 27.
Sankey says the conference is always open for new competition.
“While the SEC has not proactively sought new members, we will pursue significant change when there is a clear consensus among our members that such actions will further enrich the experiences of our student-athletes and lead to greater athletic and academic achievement across our campuses,” Sankey said.
There will be 16 teams in the SEC if the request is fulfilled. The plans for the Big 12 finding replacements or expanding is unknown. Television contracts must be negotiated before OU and Texas make their departure.

I’m done with College Football. Greed has killed it.
Hold up...
The Tide makes more money for Bama than it spends.
Yea, big 12 will be like wac or acc.
Been a long time coming and Texas is in the role of a redheaded step child.
Good, now ‘Bama will have someone good to play.
UT - off to try to kill another conference.
Killed Southwest Conference.
Big 8 took them in and they killed the host.
ATM left to escape them but the wormed their way back into their world.
UT barely above .500 in the last 10 years against so-called mediocre competition in the Big XII. Hiring new coaches every 4-5 years.
Spoiled rich kids
I expect a lot of schools to drop football in the coming years, there may only be 50 Division I schools left after this is all over.
Usually it’s Alabama and Clemson plus everyone else. So playoffs ate not working as expected.
Sooners support the whole sports program at OU. Most of the big programs are that way. TV$$
Agree !
I think that should apply to all Power 5 football & basketball.
Or div 2 could take off.
One Conference to rule them all, One Conference to find them, One Conference to bring them all and in the darkness bind them..................................
UT isn’t good enough to hate
Don’t like it, but why not bring in Clemson and Ohio State along with Texas and Oklahoma?
College football was much more interesting when the conferences existed on a regional basis and the top teams met in the playoffs at the end of the season, or occasionally in regular season, major inter-conference match-ups.
“The SEC is the defacto NFL minor league. Might as well let the NFL pay for it and suspend tax payer generated scholarships and sports funding”
*****
The SEC should drop out of the NCAA and pay their athletes.
I understand. It is not the game of our youth. Too commercial. Too polished. Compromised by the magnitude of financial stakes. Not as appealing anymore. Maybe I’m just getting old.
PAC 10 is now a smelly turd. Past it’s shelf life
Exactly.
Texas is going waltz in with a list of demands eventually. However, I do not think the SEC will cave.
Leaves my Cyclones in a bind, but I hope Iowa State can beat them one last time till Texas starts losing to the powerhouse of Old Miss.
And I have nothing against Old Miss
“We’re Texas”
