California Democrats fret a tsunami of voter discontent and lackluster turnout could sink Gov. Gavin Newsom even as Republicans worry he could survive a Sept. 14 recall in a photo finish because of decent approval ratings and an uninspiring field of GOP opponents.
More than a coronavirus resurgence and frustrating reimplementation of mask mandates in some corners of California, Newsom is under political pressure from rampant homelessness and rising crime — issues polling “off the charts” with voters across the state. The $262 billion state budget Newsom promoted as proof California is “roaring back” from the pandemic did little to assuage dissatisfied swing voters, and Democrats now worry Republican enthusiasm and liberal disinterest could combine for a recall defeat.
“The governor’s team is in a quandary,” Andrew Acosta, a Democratic strategist in Sacramento, said Monday. “They can’t tell everyone that they are in trouble, but if Democrats don't take it seriously, it could be close. I still think the governor is in the driver’s seat, but it could be an interesting 50 days.”

Since when is Larry Elder “uninspiring “?
There isn’t a strong candidate running against Newsom that would get the required cross-over vote. It will be a waste of time and money and the Dems will blame the Republicans rather than Newsom’s incompetency.

If I was a betting man, I would say that nothing will happen to Newsome.
To many people out there don’t think he has done anything wrong, and they are going to protect him come hell or high water, because if he loses, then they lose.
He is “their” guy, and that trumps everything else.
doesn’t work that way, he who gets the most votes (assuming 50%+1 vote to recall) wins.
Elder could win with less than 10%
as long as the other 50 candidates finish lower.
Thank you for that clarification. Still such a long shot I’m not even considering it happening.
Ignore that, it’s just liberal flatulance talking
Dems got, diarrea de la boca
Way to fight, bhl!
I’m old/wise enough to pick my battles. California is a one party state. No poll shows that the recall is a winning issue. Maybe only the “pro-recall” voters will show up and vote— who knows.
It’s doable. With nothing going on between the Sept. 14 recall and November 2 we’ve got nothing else to do. What’s most disappointing is the freepers here-not even trying. I gave Larry Elder $100 and offered to call/followup on 100 voters when the ballots arrive. No evidence the county GOP offices are working on it. 80k volunteer signature gatherers out there are being told to go to the hot place.
IMO Newsom might lose if the big-city public schools remain closed on election day, and will win if they are open.
Yep...
he will be recalled when his term is over
