The mRNA vaccines work by having the body generate part of the Covid virus so that the immune system can recognize it and learn to generate antibodies to fight it. The part of the Covid virus that being produced is the spike protein (the protrusions you see on illustrations of the virus). The vaccine is injected into arm muscle, it's muscle cells in the arm that will use the mRNA to generate these spike proteins. These proteins are supposed to remain in the arm.

These spike proteins are made up of 2 subunits, S1 and S2. The first paper states that in 3 of 13 participants entire spike proteins were detected in the blood, meaning there were travelling throughout the body. In 11 of 13 participants the S1 subunit was detected in the blood, meaning it's staying around longer after the spike protein breaks down.

The second paper states that this S1 protein that is in the blood of 11 of 13 participants has been discovered to induce hypercoagulation - which is a condition where your blood clots more easily than normal.
