The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) on Monday become the first federal agency to require its frontline health care workers to be vaccinated.
President Joe Biden confirmed the move in a brief statement to reporters Monday afternoon.
'Yes. Veteran Affairs is going to in fact require that all docs working in facilities are going to have to be vaccinated,' Biden said, following a report quoting his Veterans Affairs secretary regarding health care workers at the VA.
115,000 staffers will have two months to get inoculated against the coronavirus, and face being fired if they do not oblige.
President Biden confirmed that 'all docs' at the VA would be asked to get the shot ahead of his meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi in the Oval Office.
Denis McDonough, the secretary of veterans affairs, told the New York Times: 'I am doing this because it’s the best way to keep our veterans safe, full stop.
He added that the mandates would apply to the employees who have the most contact with patients.
This includes doctors, dentists, nurses, physicians assistants and physical therapists at VA medical centers across the country.
The Biden administration has so far been unwilling to back federal vaccine mandates, and has insisted it is up to private companies.
The move came after White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the White House 'supports the steps of hospitals' to require staff to get vaccinated, saying it 'could be a guide for us on what to do with our own workforce here from the federal government.'
She noted there are 'certain powers' that the federal government has, and 'certain powers that the federal government does not have.'

This is reasonable. The VA is full of old and fragile people with tons of known vulnerabilities re covid. Anyone working with them should have been vaccinated long since, as is usual around the world in such cases. Medical “front liners” (including those who work in nursing homes, etc.) are generally first in line for vaccination, for good reasons.
And this goes for flu vaccines too, as that is a primary or contributing cause of death for old people, which should be obvious to anyone who looks at mortality charts.
This is along the lines of mandated hygiene, hand-washing, sterilization of instruments, etc.
The easiest way is for the OP to hit the abuse button and ask the mods, pretty please, to add this to the sidebar. Say, in Extended or Front Page News.
Smokers, drinkers, et al actually save any public medical/pension system money. They die off substantially sooner than the “healthy”, so absorb fewer medical resources overall, over time. We are all eventually a drain on the system no matter our state of health, we (mostly) all become expensive. There are rather few ideal cases of people who never visit a doctor, and then just fall over and die suddenly.

It's totalitarian, un-American, and strikes at the heart of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". This is an EUA concoction and hundreds of thousands have either died or had serious (some permanent) bad reactions to these awful drugs. These should be banned, much less required for anything.

There are reasonable concerns re covid vaccines. Nearly all of them pertain to long term effects, which could not be tested for, in the very short time this has been possible. The greatest danger of long term problems is developmental issues with children and fertile women (when or if they get pregnant; lots of these long term problems, notorious cases such as with Thalidomide and DES, but there is a growing research base on all sorts of other cases, that manifest in pregnancy), so these people should have been excluded from vaccination from the beginning.
But even so, they should not be working in VA facilities or nursing homes, etc.

There is no such reaction (hundreds of thousands of deaths, etc.) visible in international mortality data. I monitor European mortality stats from civil records, and given the huge rate of vaccination thats going on there right, and over the last three months, we would be seeing that if its is to be seen. But I don’t see it.
This is one example, Spain. Its got much more reliable and timely civil records than the US. IMHO, the vast majority of doctors, nurses, etc. are vaccinated.
