John Lennon’s ‘Imagine,’ blared at the Olympics, is a totalitarian’s anthem
New York Post ^ | July 25, 2021 | Robert Barron

John Lennon's song "Imagine" was a poor choice to play at the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony. The Olympics opening ceremonies in Tokyo featured one of the worst pop songs of all time: Yes, I’m speaking of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” sung by a large children’s choir and a bevy of celebrities. As a fan of the Beatles and Lennon especially, it pains me to say this, but it’s true: While its melody and arrangement are indeed beautiful, the lyrics are an invitation to moral and political chaos. Consider the opening verse: “Imagine there’s no heaven / It’s easy if you try / No hell below us, above us only sky / Imagine all the people livin’ for today.” I frankly can’t imagine anything worse.

“Imagine there’s no hell below us”
“Above us only sky”
“Imagine no possessions”

Yeah... there was a group of totalitarians who forced their subjects to live by that code... it was called the Khmer Rouge.

Lennon was responsible for beautiful music, but he was a turd. Goes along with being a communist who thinks everyone else in the world has to work hard just so HE can have everything he wants.

So who was watching? I read that the viewership of the opening ceremonies was at a 33 year low.

I told a room full of people in college that Jim Morrison sucked.

Got a little dicey.

I just can’t stand suicide chumps as Zappa referred to then as.

Meanwhile they are worshipping the Japanese Flag and disrespecting the American Flag. Sad that the NBA folks lost to France LOL

I’m sure the Japanese were fine with the song. They tend to change religion with a given situation.

Old saying:

The Japanese are born Shinto (Pray for good fortune)

Married as Christians (pretty ceremonies)

Die Buddhists (Get to come back again)

Years after Imagine—Maybe by age 40 he was starting to mature
and enjoy life with his wife and (second) son. Then he got the urge to record again.

“I can hardly wait to see you come of age, but in the meantime I guess we’ll just have to be patient”—”Beautiful Boy”

His life then was cut short as he returned from a recording session.Ironically
background music at the hospital was
playing All My Loving—a Paul song.
And the jokes:

Judy Tenuta (imitates Yoko’s caterwauling)—”I’m sorry, but if that guy
had just aimed a little to the left,
he’d be a hero!”

National Lampoon imagined Yoko writing them:”Imagine no possessions? What a
terrible, terrible thought.”

Above Us Only Sky—Liverpool Airport motto

I always get a chuckle thinking of a guy who was worth a billion dollars when he died (back when a billion was a lot of money) and yet had the audacity to urge us to "imagine no possessions".

But as for playing a Lennon tune at the Olympics I say it should be "And Your Bird Can Sing". That was Lennon at his best.

What opening ceremony?

Is there an Olympics this year?

I gave up after biological men were allowed to compete against women.

I've visited the main gate at The Dakota. The guards there wouldn't say a word to me about what happened. I assume that they're instructed to keep quiet...although it's possible that they don't know much.

“Imagine” was always a pretty song, but vapid and non-intellectual.

I would have loved to see what McCartney in his prime could have added to it.

Neither one of them was very good on their own- but put them together and they had a synergistic effect on each other. The whole was greater than the sum of the parts.

No Olympics too
No place to belong to

Beautiful song. No one cares what it’s about. Guess you can say I’m a dreamer.

Agree Re their collaborating. Wings under McCartney had some catchy songs. For sheer songwriters The Bee Gees wrote approximately 1000 songs . There’s a great HBO documentary Re the group by the surviving brother. No politics , minimal party animal focus, just a great look at how good they were but for many are just remembered for their falsetto group songs

Everyone who worships the words to that song believe they were written for everyone but them.
