He was taking off but the cliff in front of the runway as you’re landing to the east is a little intimidating to a student pilot on solo cross-country.

How old was he?
From the article I guess very old since they mention top gun in 1985...

Probably late 60’s. From reading his bio earlier, believe he was commissioned in the early/mid 70’s and retired from the navy as a captain around 2000! Believe his last command was as Commander, Fighter Wing, US Atlantic Fleet! He loved flying so much he joined a barnstorming flying company so he could continue to fly fighter type aircraft at air shows.

Absolutely incredible that such an incredible pilot with all those aircraft carrier landings - clearly one of the best in the world - flying a high-powered STOL plane, would die in such a plane!
Of course, there are critical moments in take-off where total power loss or other major mechanical failure is deadly and where no pilot can prevent what happened.
I’m pretty certain that this is not pilot error, but mechanical failure. Tragic.
If he was to die flying, you’d think it would be in a jet. But then the engine was a turbo-jet........
Interested in what experienced pilots here think......

First reports are extreme pitch-up on takeoff. That would result in a stall.
There is not enough information as to why but it could be pilot commanded pitch-up, incapacitated pilot, incorrect GC or trim setting, elevator uncommanded input, wake vortex or weather related.
