The political committee behind the effort is reportedly fueled by a single $500,000 donation from progressive billionaire George Soros.
A 12-1 vote from the Minneapolis City Council pushed a petition drive to replace Minneapolis’ police force with a department of public safety on to the November ballot.
The proposal will ask voters if they want to approve a plan to replace the police department with a new public safety department focused on a “comprehensive public safety approach” that would include police officers “if necessary to fulfill the department’s responsibilities.”
A new political committee calling itself Yes 4 Minneapolis gathered 20,000 petition signatures to place a question on the ballot to amend the city’s charter. In February, it was reported that the group is fueled by a single $500,000 donation from progressive billionaire George Soros’ Open Society Policy Center, according to campaign finance documents.
The plan would eliminate the charter’s requirement for a minimum number of police officers and remove the mayor’s “complete power” over the department.
The plan’s advancement follows a June court order for the 435,000-person city to hire more police officers since it’s currently violating its charter by understaffing the department. Many officers quit or claimed disability following the death of George Floyd in police custody.
Hennepin County District Judge Jamie Anderson’s writ of mandamus ordered the Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey to “immediately take any and all necessary action to ensure that they fund a police force” of at least 730 sworn officers, or more if required by the 2020 census to be published later this year, by June 30, 2022.
The writ of mandamus comes a year after the Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed a resolution to commit to disbanding the police force and creating a new public safety model in its place.
Meanwhile, violent crime surged. Carjackings increased 537% year-to-date in November 2020. More than 550 people were wounded by gunfire in 2020, exceeding a 100% increase over 2019, while people shot more than 24,000 bullets in Minneapolis in 2020.
According to city data, there were 82 homicides in 2020, the third-worst year in city history. The Star Tribune reported 97 homicides were recorded in 1995, the worst year on record when the city was given the nickname “Murderapolis,” followed by 83 homicides in 1996. In 2019, there were 48 homicides.
Why won’t someone. ….ANYONE….please see to George Soros!
Have the Rs fixed voter theft or are we rolling into new elections with the same corrupt system?
If that passes then wall off the state. No way people will vote to defund the police. This is a antifa and blm thing.
Republicans are raging female orifices.
>>Why won’t someone. ….ANYONE….please see to George Soros!<<
Good grief! How bout the people in that voting district?
Defund the police, then when chaos and crime ensue...whine about it.
You would think that there is a small minority of “squeaky wheels” making this sort of noise regarding defund the police, but when election time comes...the proposal would be overwhelmingly defeated, handing these leftist humiliation.
But no. The people up in Mini, Portland really are just that stupid.
Perfect. Another rigged election.
They haven't had enough?????
Are these people ABSOLUTELY NUTS?????
“...comprehensive public safety approach” that would include police officers “if necessary to fulfill the department’s responsibilities.”
So changing the approach to public safety, when the acts that the liberals say are not effective, which is going to free up the criminals to more harm as they are given more leeway to their safety, with them not being held to the same responsibilities as the targets called people they are putting in front of them, is intelligent?
I’m reminded of the police support in the last Robocop movie when they stood against the government led criminal soldiers against the citizens of that area. Problem is that it was just as un-necessary in the movie as it is now.

Exactly… can’t someone.. anyone place a sniper within a clear shot of that evil POS?
Remember, Minnesota voters elected muslim girlfriend beater Keith Ellison as their state’s AG. A defund-the-police measure will easily pass in Minneapolis.
“Why won’t someone. ….ANYONE….please see to George Soros!”
And when they “see to” him, ensure that there are multiple “sees”, just to make sure.
Oh, tomorrow would be fine.
“Oh, tomorrow would be fine.”
Don’t forget he has a son as bad as he is.

Hey Georgie ... Hell awaits you.
If you use this change to the George Floyd-scenario....who gets the call to a counterfeit situation? Regular police. So the Floyd mess would have occurred even with this group of prevention folks.
I’m sorry to say this, but I’m tired of caring. If Minneapolis is stupid enough to vote for something like this, then let them reap what they sow.
Welcome to the third world morons.
20,000 petition signatures of morons or criminals
Democracy is where the people get what they want - good and hard !
Why is Soros still alive?
