Since he is stuck with an “antique” hardware platform he is limited to what OSystem he can use. (Hmm, “antique”? Do you refer to your Mother that way?).
I’ve several PC’s and some are limited similarly. Will not use recent versions of Firefox as they are full of M$-type crappola and shiny junk of no use to any but their friends in the office. Yeah, that pack of militant politisized TWOT’s at Mozilla go on and on about safety features. So did M$. I use an old, old FF version ‘cause it is fast. I also use an antivirus.
As to a search engine, I use DDG without noticing this phenomenon. Will check.

I hear ya. Even ddg sucks for a lot of things now. News for one and recipes omfg. Search for a recipe and you’ll get page after page of women with food blogs that they spent $5,000.00 to have built for them. 10+ paragraphs of blah blah blah before they get around to the actual recipe. A lot have a Jump to Recipe link but they all have way too many ads that slow down the page and make it jumpy as more and more ads load.

Most of the recipe sites are bloated crap these days. Recipezaar used to be great but food.com aka the Food Network bought them out. Cooks.com is decent but outdated.

Brave started their own search engine but it has a long way to go. https://search.brave.com Can be added to the browser and be made the default search engine. I used it for a few weeks and swapped back to ddg.

Windows XP Pro

That's like driving a 1988 Chevy Cavalier with all the options.

Embrace the suck.

Mine; Lenovo Thinkpad W530 purchased off of ebay as an off-lease machine for $250.00. 8x Intel Core i7 @ 2.70GHz with 16gb of RAM running Kubuntu 20.04. It will take anything I throw at it. I also have Win 7 Pro on the other partition with dual boot but I hardly ever use Win and when I do, it's not allowed to connect to a network or the web because it's not safe to get on the web with 7 or XP. Win 7 isn't allowed to update either as that would make it slower. With Kubuntu, I can have the latest browsers installed. I'm running firefox developer's edition version 91. I also run Waterfox and Brave. Laptop starts up in under 30 seconds. Shuts down in under 5 seconds. Rarely have to restart after an update.

and it's purty

Need to open up the machine and blow the CPU fan out. The CPU temps have been running in the yellow zone lately. I'm late baby boomer at 55 years old but I try not to fall behind in this world.

I loved Yippy, it gave lots of esoteric links not provided by other search engines. It was bought by DDG several months ago :(

I was using it until well after Rather*gate* .
Went to a computer in 06 and now, two fried hard drives later, I’m perfectly happy to use just a tablet. Only interested in Web access, email and shopping anyway and this serves my purpose.
