The UC Davis’ Agricultural Issues Center (AIC) has posted an unpublished report titled Agriculture’s Role in the Economy on their website so data analysts and researchers can begin to utilize the information.
The report includes information on agriculture in California, particularly its impact on California’s economy. It shows that California farming employs 7.3 percent of the state’s private sector labor force and accounts for 5.6 percent of the state labor income.
California agriculture is a significant part of the overall economy and, of course, a vital source for many food products, said Daniel Sumner, a professor of agriculture and resource economics and the AIC’s director. California places in the top 10 of the world’s agriculture rankings, ahead of countries such as Canada, Mexico, Germany and Spain.
This posted report is one chapter in the upcoming book The Measure of California Agriculture with more chapters to be posted coming this spring.
We decided not to wait for the rest of the material, Sumner said in an e-mail interview. Placing our [information] on the web when it is ready is a convenient way to get it to the people who are interested.
Also mentioned in the report is information on the contribution of agriculture on the Californian gross state product and its impact on regional economies, including Sacramento County, the San Joaquin Valley and the Central Valley. In addition, California’s agricultural production and its direct effect on the state’s economy is also included in the chapter.
[California] generates about $97.7 billion of the state’s total sales output, said Marcia Kreith, AIC staff and contributor to the report. Of that $97.7 billion, agricultural production and processing in the Central Valley – the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys combined – accounted for 43 percent.

However, no worse then YOUR cities in your state.
But this article is illustrative of 80% of the land mass in the state.
We are an agricultural powerhouse. And you are likely going to eat something produced here in the next 3 days.
Agriculturally, CA is supremely important not only to the USA but the world. Politically, it is a mess. But so is my home state, USSR-WA.
California fruit and produce marketed by mammoth corporations to look oh so enticing and then taste like cardboard.
Used to be 7th before they shut down the water to the central valley for some imaginary fish.
“Used to be 7th before they shut down the water to the central valley for some imaginary fish.”
You’re confused.
CA used to be the 7th largest economy in the world.
Now it is 5th or 6th.
As for the ag economy, it’s worth nearly $100b per year, with $50bil of that direct sales by farmers and ranchers.
It dwarfs the ag production of any other state.
“California fruit and produce marketed by mammoth corporations to look oh so enticing and then taste like cardboard.”
CA has the largest USDA Certified Organic production in the US, and the world.
Does that taste like cardboard?
Unfortunately we don’t have an identical control group, e.g. a state exactly like California but not subjected to at least four decades of extreme liberal mismanagement, graft, environmental hurdles, and high taxes to compare against. My intuition says such a hypothetical state would be in vastly better shape by all meaningful metrics.
I will raise a glass of California wine to this thread.
“My intuition says such a hypothetical state would be in vastly better shape by all meaningful metrics.”
That is certain.
And that’s why we have formed the State of Jefferson.
cheers
Imagine the numbers if they allowed everyone in CA to irrigate.
Good point.
“Imagine the numbers if they allowed everyone in CA to irrigate.”
There’s not enough water to irrigate every tillable acre.
Already ag uses 78% of all available water. And there’s no more available.
We natives want to keep our rivers alive. We will ensure no more comes available.
Among the states, Texas is ranked #1 for total livestock and livestock product receipts. It’s ranked #2 for total agricultural receipts, behind California.
In terms of revenue generated, Texas’s top five agricultural products are beef cattle and calves, cotton, broilers (young chickens), greenhouse and nursery products, and diary products.

All the money and the homeless in California are literally everywhere and not to mention CA has some of the highest taxes in the entire country.
It's not joy for me. They took the crown jewel of America and turned it into a sh*t bucket. It's why tens of thousands are and have been leaving for decades, only to be replaced by millions of illegals and foreign nationals. It's why the state is doomed to become worse and worse.
In 6 months no frickn way.
shutdown water for almonds and there would be no worries.
The State of Jefferson*
*Will never be a state
I was amazed that even many of the organizers for the SOJ that I have talked to had no idea what the legislative hurdles are to create a new state, or that it is functionally impossible in CA.
California is an amazing state with top universities, brilliant engineers who designed space shuttles and micro chips, and wonderful park. Sadly, the 21 Catholic missions are ignored and losers become leaders. Still, CA has huge industries.
